I sometimes feel like I don't know how to deliberately come up with ideas at all, but I'm not sure if I'm actually like that (it's probably just insecurity or something, lol).

Do people like that actually exist, though? If so, why are they like that? And how do they learn to deliberately think of ideas?

For some context, we are first generation immigrants. My parents are Russian, my mother and her husband have been living here for 20 years (even got rid of Russian citizenship couple years ago), my biological father is still living in Russia.

It's damn exhausting to discuss political topics with them, especially my father. He keeps telling me how great it is to live in Russia, how their economy is doing great and how he's proud that they are defending their "brothers" in Donezk and Luhansk from the evil bandera regime in Ukraine.

My mom voted far right in the past election. She doesn't believe she voted for nazis, but the party's views on economics, climate policy and immigration seem to align with hers. She believes wind farms are harmful for the environment. What the actual fuck.

Whenever I try to argue with them, they tell me that I've been brainwashed by "Western propaganda".

I'm at a loss. I love my parents and I know that nobody's immune to propaganda, but it's heartbreaking to see them holding these toxic beliefs. How would you deal with parents like these? Should I just declare to never talk about politics with them again since it's pointless?

I'm looking for a job. I saw Alice works at ACME brick. Bob knows Alice. Bob and I used to work together. I asked Bob if he could introduce me to Alice so I can ask Alice 1) for help getting in touch with the hiring manager and 2) what the company culture is like. Bob said yes and I asked Alice my questions, with Bob CC'ed in the message.

This has seemed OK with most people. However Bob said my conversation with Alice seemed one sided and excessive and like I was taking advantage of him just to get to the hiring manager. I am, correctly, asking for help getting to the hiring manager, for inside info. I am not only asking that, but it is part of what I'm asking. I am also asking about company culture and advice when talking to the interviewer. Bob was very upset and I think I've burned that bridge.

Is this wrong, in general? Is it OK but not asking too often? Most people seemed to be OK with it, but I worry they were just being polite and I've been unknowingly pissing off my entire social life and hurting my chances at getting a job. (why yes, I do have anxiety and take meds.)

It seems that there are a lot of Israelis that believe that there are no innocents in Gaza. And one could argue that it's possible that a significant majority of the population is hateful towards Israelis, considering the history.

If you agree with this argument, can you please explain why and elaborate? And if you don't, how would you refute it? There is no data that shows that there isn't a significant majority that's hateful towards the Israelis.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not stating my opinion as I want to hear an unbiased opinion from you.

Like I know not everyone is a political commentator and won't touch politics for fear of ostracizing their audience.

But sometimes seeing most creators not expressing any shock at these unprecedented times makes me think "damn this seems dystopian".

I imagine what would the world be like if streaming was available during Hitlers rise.

Would people just be living in their bubble of "thanks for watching, hit like and subscribe, and if you use this code on simplisafe you'll get 20 percent off!" winky face

Idk if I could do it, never talk about it or taking a stand. Its just too big to ignore. At least imo.

What do you guys think? Also lemmy wanted me to add a picture so here's a picture of my dog.

In the 1970's and 1980's there were several books the either had characters that did it or promoted it.

Why is there no cooking tray in my new car's engine bay?

Is it dangerous? (It would be less physically dangerous if there was a specific spot for it.)

I miss malls. I miss the dynamic nature of them. I miss exploring them. I miss seeing all the things that people could buy. I miss the atmosphere. I miss the fountain you throw your pennies in. I miss meeting so many different people. I miss the escalators. I miss the joy of going into the mall pet shop and seeing the animals warm up to you. I miss sitting at the food courts, eating my weirdly quality pizza and taking in the ambiance. Hell, I miss getting lost in malls.

One of the things that feels like a stab in the heart as an aspiring parent is I will never be able to take my kids to the mall and have them experience the same experience. I look at malls now and want to cry. Look at me, a commie crying over a pillar of capitalism. That's how much of a friend malls were to me, yet nobody I know will say they relate.

Your way of doing things is now how things must be done. Extra points for petty and minor stuff.

The kid's grandparents got him an Amazon Fire tablet and I loathe the thing. It teaches literally nothing about computing and the games they have for kids are barely even games, and are more focusing on advertising various IPs.

I'd like to get the kid started, as he learns to read, on something that will be more useful than detrimental, let that soft little brain soak up some actual computer science, literacy. I teach him about basic electrical circuits and how that translates to computing, if, and, or, xor, nor, etc. He's got some familiar with hex (colors) and the concept of binary (on/off).

But what to get for a first computer? I almost want to get him something Linux based and turn him loose. Is there anything like that, that would require him to learn some command prompt and basic computing skills?

Every time and try and Google it, I get a bunch of crap suggestions and ads.

I'm putting away $300 a month, my question is where to put it. savings account has basically 0 interest, there are HYSA (high yield savings account) that would give me 3-5% apy, or I already have some money in stocks that have grown consistently 25% over the last year (index funds only)

what would you guys recommend? I'm looking to buy it probably 3 years from now. that way either I've got a fat down payment or I can just buy it cash

thanks

I have seen all kind of claims, bit they seems to be in the future, like 1.000.000qbits or perfect error correction.

Do they have a real breakthrough or is it just undergoing advancments on a slow road?

Hi guys, I'm new here, I'm trying to figure one thing. Is there a way to filter words like "Elon" so I could get a US politics free homepage?

I can't find a filters page, am I missing some link that gets me there?

Hi everyone, I need your help with something.

My old JBL headphones are starting to degrade, and so I'm looking for a replacement. As I have a FairPhone now, I don't have an aux jack anymore. I'm also not a huge fan of audio over bluetooth.

So I've started searching for some simple over-ear or on-ear cabled headphones that connect with a USB C cable. I have found one from lenovo, but it is a headset with a boom mic. Ideally I just want headphones, simple and robust. I don't care about noise-cancelling or other bells and whistles.

Anyone have anything?

Note: I know adapters are a thing. I find them annoying and prone to damage. I don't want to use one.

So I just bought a fairphone 5 and it has a ToF (time of flight) sensor. I was searching on fdroid and found nothing and Google play only had shitty freemium apps with ads.

Hello everybody,

What is the company and corporation that is the object of your hate? What did/do they do to get that spot for you?

Mine is Facebook/Meta for their egregious data collection policies, psychological manipulation of its users, and more recently, them not seeding content.

Thanks in advance for your time! Have a good one!

Sometimes, I want to post something and I wonder "what is the right community for this?". I know about lemmyverse.net but I feel like mobile apps (android in my case) need some sort of "community list", so we can easily browse/search for the appropriate community.

I am currently using Eternity/Boost, and neither seem to have that. Or am I missing it somehow?

I find that this is one of the main issues of lemmy/federation.

Title essentially. Youtube's algorithm is hot garbage, so I can't search for anything anymore without a ton of AI slop and rage bait. So, who do you go to for actual good long form videos? Exposes, scandals, behind the scenes, documentaries, film, travel, transit, who do you recommend I follow?

I’ve occasionally noticed ordinary comments with zero upvotes to them. Yet, our own comments are upvoted automatically whenever we make them. So for comments to have zero upvotes, either something I don’t know about is happening, or there are people who downvote their own contributions.

I can’t help but wonder, why? It seems like extra effort without a clear reason.

Small rant: Perhaps I'm getting old and cynical, but the entire process through their sites feels a lil sketchy lol

Sure, it requires the basics, along with your SSN and cellphone to receive a text confirmation. Can't just be me, right?

Anyways, thanks for answering my crazy questions due to my lack of faith in the safety of the internet in the days of SEO's. 🤣
