In the meeting held at United Nations headquarters on July 28-30, Cuba reiterated its firm commitment to the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. It denounced the systematic violations and atrocities committed by Israel as the occupying power.

Ambassador Yuri Gala, Charge d’Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, affirmed in his speech at the forum that his country “has joined the call of the most international community for decisive action to end one of the longest-standing injustices of our time.”

He said injustice has worsened in these last two years, during which “Israel has perpetrated crimes against humanity, collective punishment, Apartheid, and genocide against the Palestinian people with impunity.”

Ambassador Gala recalled on Wednesday the high number of dead, injured, and displaced persons, as well as the destruction of hospitals, schools, mosques, and other civilian infrastructure, in clear violation of International Humanitarian Law, which “places us before a painful reality that lacerates the conscience of humanity.”

Gala emphasized that concrete actions are urgently needed in the UN Security Council to stop the ongoing genocide, allow for the delivery of sufficient and unrestricted humanitarian aid, and guarantee the vital work of UNRWA (the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East).

The Cuban representative also recalled that more than 145 countries already recognize the State of Palestine and emphasized that its admission as a full member of the UN cannot be delayed further.

Justice for Palestine cannot wait any longer. “Let us act with the urgency that humanity demands, that the Palestinian people need, as an unavoidable condition for achieving a just, lasting, and permanent peace in the Middle East,” he concluded.

Each of these demonstrations carries its own message. At one, saying "starvation isn't a Jewish value" would be considered provocative; at another, signs declare "end the genocide." Some rail against the government for allowing Haredi youth to dodge the military draft, while others call for wholesale refusal to serve in the military at all.

The U.N. agency tasked with distributing aid in Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, has maintained for months that it has received no specific evidence that Hamas or other armed groups were diverting its humanitarian aid in Gaza.

“These claims are used as a pretext to justify the aid distribution system supported by the Israeli authorities and the United States of America (so called GHF), which falls far from abiding to the humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law,” an UNRWA spokesperson told The Intercept in a statement.

The deprivation from starvation and siege is visible upon people’s faces. People are looking hollow-eyed and tired. We are suffering not just from hunger, but from abandonment. Palestinians have been turned into symbols of suffering and defiance, whereas what we want is not only to survive, but also to truly live and feel alive once more. Instead, as the whole world watches, for nearly two years we have been brutally murdered and tormented in the most horrific and innovative ways that a human mind can devise.

As a #Palestinian doctor living and working in #Israel, in the midst of a longstanding conflict, I learned during my studies and work that injustice has been done to many populations living here. The occupation and coercion that Israel exercises over the Palestinian population in the occupied territories and the policy of discrimination against the Palestinian minority living within Israel cause serious harm to the right to health of these populations. Control over territories, expulsion, dispossession, violence, restriction of movement, establishment of settlements and apartheid cause great suffering to the population, prevent access to medical care and directly affect their health.

They also emphasize that at this point, women and children in Gaza are in need of not just food but also specialized medical care to reverse severe malnutrition.

“The proposal is ludicrous,” said Dr. John Kahler, a pediatrician who co-founded a nonprofit group MedGlobal that supports re-feeding centers for children in Gaza. “Nothing new needs to get done. It’s a simple but not easy solution: Stop the bombing, open up the gates, and let the people who know how to do it, do it.”

No ceasefire will erase the smell of blood that clings to our memories. No ceasefire can bring back those we have lost. No one can compensate the orphans or widows. No one can delete the massacres, the death traps disguised as aid centers. No one can erase the images of bodies in pieces, of blood soaked into the floor, of children crushed beneath rubble, of injured and amputated people, of infants and fetuses killed in their mothers’ wombs, of starved people suffering from malnutrition. No one can make us forget the taste of nothing during starvation and the feeling of helplessness in front of seeing our futures destroyed.
