A United Airlines flight traveling from Washington Dulles International Airport made an emergency landing last month after the pilot declared a mayday call shortly after takeoff due to suspected engine failure.

United flight 108, bound for Munich, Germany, was forced to return to Dulles on July 25 “to address a mechanical issue,” the airline told CNN.

The plane, a Boeing 787, was carrying 219 passengers and 11 crew members, the airline said.

Minutes into its ascent and at nearly 5,000 feet, the pilot told air traffic control, “Engine failure, left engine, United 108 declaring an emergency. Mayday, mayday, mayday,” according to recorded air traffic control audio.

An air traffic controller asked the pilot, “Are you able to make your way back to the field at this time” by turning right. “There’s nobody between you and the field,” the controller said.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced today that it will begin an orderly wind-down of its operations following the passage of a federal rescissions package and the release of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s FY 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H) appropriations bill, which excludes funding for CPB for the first time in more than five decades.

For nearly 60 years, CPB has carried out its Congressional mission to build and sustain a trusted public media system that informs, educates, and serves communities across the country. Through partnerships with local stations and producers, CPB has supported educational content, locally relevant journalism, emergency communications, cultural programming, and essential services for Americans in every community.

The US economy added just 73,000 jobs last month, and the monthly totals for May and June were revised down by 258,000 jobs, to 19,000 and 14,000, respectively, according to data released Friday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With those monumental revisions, job growth in June was the weakest in more than four years.

Stock futures dropped lower after the jobs report. Dow futures were down 450 points, or 1%. S&P 500 futures fell 1.1% and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 1.3%.

The Trump administration is set to destroy $9.7 million worth of US-purchased contraceptives rather than deliver them to women overseas, following the dismantling of foreign assistance programs carried out by the US Agency for International Development, or USAID.

The “preliminary decision” to destroy the USAID-procured birth control was confirmed by a State Department spokesperson, who said the cost of incinerating them would be $167,000.

(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the European Union on Sunday that will require imports from the 27-nation bloc to face a 15% tariff.

Trump had previously threatened tariffs of 30% on European goods. Trump announced the the deal after a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"It's a good deal for everybody," Trump told reporters after the meeting at his golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland.

Trump has been on a roll recently, announcing deals with Indonesia (19 tariff on imports), the Philippines (19% tariff on imports) and Japan (15% tariff on imports) earlier this week.

Trump said the EU will buy $750 billion in energy from the U.S. and agreed to invest $600 billion in the U.S.

"We have a trade deal between the two largest economies in the world. It's a big deal, it’s a huge deal, it will bring stability, it will be predictability," von der Leyen said. "It's a good deal, it's a tough deal."

It's the biggest deal Trump has reached so far.

U.S. total goods trade with the European Union were an estimated $975.9 billion in 2024. U.S. goods exports to the European Union in 2024 were $370.2 billion. U.S goods imports from the European Union totaled $605.8 billion in 2024. The U.S. goods trade deficit with the European Union was $235.6 billion in 2024, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.

By comparison, U.S. trade goods with Japan totaled an estimated $227.9 billion in 2024.

Trump has been working to reorder global trade through tariffs to give U.S. companies an advantage at home.

Economists, businesses and some publicly traded companies have warned that tariffs could raise prices on a wide range of consumer products.

Trump has said he wants to use tariffs to restore manufacturing jobs lost to lower-wage countries in decades past, shift the tax burden away from U.S. families and pay down the national debt.
