"The Washington "Whatever's" should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this," Mr. Trump wrote.

Hours later, Mr. Trump said he "may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins,' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington."

I really liked when they were "Washington Football Team" for a season. Now that's a name i can root for

Money. Money is the reason they couldn’t stay “Football Team”. The Trademark & Patent Office told them that it was too generic and that they couldn’t trademark it. Therefore anyone could sell merchandise with the name on it. That’s not going to fly, so Commanders it is.

As a side note, Daniel Snyder made a BIG deal about having a contest and letting the fans have a say in the new name. The truth is that he trademarked the name Commanders the day before announcing the name change. That’s what it was always going to be, and he didn’t care what the fans wanted.
