Miyazaki movies and animations. Love Lupin III
the watercolor background art is great
I've been sick this week and have watched a few
today I watched The Boy and the Heron and really enjoyed it
oh yeah, I'm 50+ without kids so I don't have any influence from little ones. But I do show them to my nieces and nephews, so they can be cool kids when they know about these things and their peers discover it
I've heard the name but couldnt place a movie or specific genre associated. I watch animated stuff rarely but there are some good ones out there.
he is the greatest animator of our lifetime. The Japanese Walt Disney
Have any recommendations that might pull me in?
It's hard for me to not just list his entire filmography. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are his two most popular films, so I guess start there.
Okay yeah, I have seen spirited away when I was a young lad. Anime in general is tough for me to get into. I've liked a few but they are always gritty and violent. "Vinland saga" "cyberpunk" "ghost in the shell" "parasite". I know there's a name for the type of anime I like but I dont remember it.
I struggle with anime in general and Miyazaki specifically. There are different storytelling conventions and it's weird when you're struggle with the structure, don't understand any of the Japanese cultural references, and they don't put any edgier into explaining it — things just are the way they are and you have to go with it.
My brain gets overwhelmed and shuts down in self defense. I had to watch Princess Mononoke about 7 times before I got through it without falling asleep. It's a good movie but like a lot of Miyazaki's films, nothing makes any sense except internally and you have to watch the whole movie and understand the themes and internal logic before it makes sense.
But I have to say, Studio Ghibli movies are worth it. I've enjoyed all the ones I've seen. They are ethereal and surreal but they tackle real shit whether directly or allegorically.
The Castle of Cagliostro
it's always been my favorite, about a thief and his gang discovering the biggest world currency counterfeit operation and then trying to destroy it
Porco Rosso
i haven't seen this one yet so maybe today I will watch it
