Isn't Taiwan China? The name of the country is literally The Republic of China.
These are two sides of a civil war that never ended.
Yes, but Taiwan has been functionally independent for over 70 years now, and have a very different social, political and economic context from mainland China.
According to wikipedia, it is a violation of the constitution of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for Taiwan to be independent and give up its claim on the mainland.
