THE POLICE PROBLEM

3977 readers

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

It came. It's been there for months already. This won't lead to some final epic showdown for democracy. Democracy lost the battle this time.

This fascism won't be voted away and the millions of assholes it emboldened now know how to do it again and face no consequences.

If this is fixable it'll take decades to fix.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 35 points 3 days ago

I'm increasingly doubtful that it will be fixed without the whole system collapsing first.

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Not what I was referencing but alright.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

maybe you want to make it clearer what you are referencing then

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)

In the coming months you will notice many cryptic posts by people who don't want to be in the next video.

[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 4 points 2 days ago

I'm lost sorry

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

What are you talking about

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What is "it" then? You could be referencing an amazon delivery truck for all we know.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -3 points 3 days ago (5 children)

Hey, but we needed to teach the dems a lesson about palestine, by making everything significantly worse! I was principled! Principled!!!!

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

At least you didn't have to live in a world where people had the option to vote for an anti-genocide candidate.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Damn, poor baby; a fraction of the horror you supported committing to foreigners had returned home to affect you. Maybe you shouldn't have spent decades loudly demonstrating that you fully consider this kind of thing fully acceptable under the assumption no-one would ever do it to you.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

If you still think protest voters impacted the 2024 election, you are deepthroating propaganda pushed to make you hate young people

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

If you think people who didnt vote didnt contribute to the problem idk what to tell you about basic math, because 1 vote is definitely more than no votes.

They are not the only issue, but they definitely helped us get to where we are.

[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You should look at the voting partiction history of this country and stop whining about the people that the rich want you to hate instead of them.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Oh, little buddy. I do hate the rich as well.

Two things can be a problem at the same time. You can hold two individual thoughts in your head at the same time, can't you?

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh, little buddy. I do hate the rich as well.

You just don't blame them for anything because you have people to your left that you actually hate as designated scapegoats.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Rich people are the cause of most of the worlds ails.

Again, two thoughts and whatnot.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Rich people are the cause of most of the worlds ails.

And you needed prompting to say it. You volunteer your hatred for the anti-genocide left.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Lol, should i start out every grievance with "rich people bad"?

What an awful take you have there.

first, rich people suck

second, i shit my pants

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lol, should i start out every grievance with “rich people bad”?

I mean, they're more at fault for the second trump term than the anti-genocide left you manage to blame without prompting.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Here's my position.

Every lost vote the dems didnt grab was for something extremely stupid.

Palestine - because a protest vote made it worse.

Abortion - because republicans actively campaign against feeding kids.

Non-voting because lazy - insanely stupid

Taxes - tarrifs

LGBT rights - they are human rights

Whatever it is. Yeah i chose palestine voters today, but ultimately it doesnt fucking matter. Because those non-voters chose this.

They chose fascism over milquetoast.

So here we are.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Unprompted again, your hatred for anyone who doesn't agree with you. The rich are more at fault than the people you hate.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

At this point, i can only assume you fell for extremely obvious propaganda, and you didn't vote.

Conragtulations, you helped the fascists. And if you did vote? Congratulations on enabling fascist enablers.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

At this point, i can only assume you fell for extremely obvious propaganda, and you didn’t vote.

You make a lot of stupid false assumptions about people you disagree with.

I voted for harris. You don't give a shit. You just want to blame the anti-genocide left you already hate because you want the permanent adoring silence of everyone to your left.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Least willfully disingenuous BlueMAGA

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Thanks for confirming yourself and feeling attacked, despite me not talking to you.

Was just waiting for something as comical as BlueMAGA.

You didn't vote, ugh. You helped elect a fascist.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh my god, go back to Reddit you loser

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Stop supporting genocide

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

because a protest vote made it worse.

No it didn't, but a genocide supporter like you is happy to lie in order to punch left.

They chose fascism over milquetoast.

They were not presented with a non-fascist option. The fact that you consider genocidal fascism "milquetoast" says more about you.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)
[–] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You can't argue for 2 causes with the same breath.

[–] Velypso@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago

People who didnt vote are stupid.

Rich people are cancer.

Its a good thing i can breathe at least twice.

[–] mika_mika@lemmy.world -2 points 2 days ago

Shut the fuck up already. No one is happy about this but I hope they come for your ilk first.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Even if every protest voter voted for Kamala, she would not have come close. Do the bare minimum of analysis before bleating out establishment propaganda you saw on digg.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social -4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

ML with blatant lies. Shocker.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dem with absolute refusal to address the issues within, I’m not shocked at all.

Official uncommitted count was just over 700k, and she lost by 2 million. Both parties lost substantial amounts of votes compared to 2020, but Dems lost way more. Repugs lost 2 million, and Dems lost 10 million voters, comparatively.

Uncommitted was not the problem, it was one problem for Dems. A far bigger problem was not holding a primary election in good faith.

Here’s a shocker for you: when these dipshits anoint yet another corporate stooge who obviously doesn’t give a fuck about people’s material living conditions and policy desires, they lose. Apparently you should get used to it.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

The president is elected via the electoral college. Trump’s margin of electoral college victory, 86 votes, was in line with historically tight races — including 2020, 2016 and 2004 — and is smaller than the winning margins of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George H.W. Bush. Trump’s margin was nowhere close to those in historic landslide elections, such as Ronald Reagan’s in 1984 and Nixon’s in 1972, who both had electoral-college margins above 500 votes. Stay in china or russia, or wherever your cave is.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In my cave, we abolish the electoral college and don’t put up with superdelegate nonsense stealing noms from progressives.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I like that you just admitted to making things up. Thanks

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Stay in china or russia, or wherever your cave is.

BlueMAGA are just fascists; blaming foreigners for all their countries problems like the McCarthyist white supremacists they are

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's no such thing as bluemaga you moron.

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago

If only there wasn't

[–] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 day ago

It's objectively true, you BlueMAGA dumbass
