Summary

Egg prices are projected to rise by 41% in 2025, according to the USDA, following an already steep increase due to a severe bird flu outbreak that reduced egg-laying hen populations.

The current average price per dozen is nearly $5, with some areas seeing prices as high as $10. Restaurants like Waffle House and Denny's have added surcharges.

Meanwhile, the USDA mistakenly fired key bird flu response workers, sparking criticism.

Trump stated his administration will take action but has offered no specifics.

Sucks for Americans. I got a dozen extra extra large eggs in Canada for 5$ Canadian...

[–] match@pawb.social 1 points 11 minutes ago

i don't have egg prices in my area. the grocery store simply removed the egg section

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 1 points 11 minutes ago (1 children)

For those living close to Canada, I wonder if they can cross the border to go grocery shopping.

[–] Frostbeard@lemmy.world 1 points 5 minutes ago

Nonono. Remeber to declare when passing into to the Reich to get that 25% added.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

I managed to find a dozen for $4.97 yesterday. It's the best I've been able to find in some time.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago (3 children)

But let's be honest. 5$ for a dozen eggs is fucking nuts too. They were so much fucking cheaper not all that long ago

[–] aceshigh@lemmy.world 1 points 11 minutes ago

… I still remember when eggs were .89 for a dozen. Those were the days.

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 2 points 1 hour ago

$5CAD is aboutt $3.50 USD. For jumbo eggs, i would call that aboit right. These are way larger than the "large" eggs most people are used to

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 2 points 2 hours ago

Correct. But the eggs I bought were extra-extra-large. If I wanted to get just large or medium I would have paid around 4 or less.

[–] ODGreen@slrpnk.net 27 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

Meanwhile in Trudeau's socialist nightmare, where eggs are under ~~kolkhoz~~ supply management, I pay $5.25 USD... for 18 eggs.

[–] RustyShackleford@programming.dev 1 points 4 minutes ago

Which is about what I was paying in Chicago back in '22. I remember Roundy's (Mariano's/Kroger's house brand) 18 Large Brown eggs was USD $4.99 before tax.

As an egg-lover, this is quite the fresh hell.

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 4 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

I normally get extra large eggs, but I just got some extra extra large eggs for 5.25$ Canadian. A dozen.

[–] tomi000@lemmy.world 1 points 22 minutes ago

[–] spooky2092@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 6 hours ago

Time to start putting up those trump 'i did this' stickers in supermarkets untill they ban me again.

[–] Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 9 points 9 hours ago (4 children)

Why does it feel like I'm reading articles about egg prices virtually every day. I don't get why anyone cares this much.

[–] daellat@lemmy.world 33 points 6 hours ago (4 children)

I guess it was because the price of eggs was practically a campaigning slogan shared a lot around trump supporters.

Because people are broke and eggs are a cheap source of protein?

[–] Gloomy@mander.xyz 4 points 4 hours ago

*were a cheap source of protein.

[–] Famko@lemmy.world 5 points 7 hours ago

It's because eggs are one of the more universal food items. Their price sort of shows how well the economy is doing so it's a nice gauge on that sort of thing.

USDA mistakenly fired key bird flu response workers

No. No they didn't.

They fired people to try to free money for more tax breaks for the top 1% with zero concern if these people were needed or useful.

[–] Bakkoda@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 hours ago

The less eggs you can afford to buy increases the supply for the people who do not need to worry about the price of eggs.

Close: they are enemies of the United States acting out of malice toward the goal of weakening the United States.

We are under attack.

Thank goodness the Orange turd is right on this in the front lines of tossing paper towels at people!

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Clearly the solution is to ban trans people from existing

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

And as a bonus for banning trans people, they think they'll go to heaven for being good little bigots for god.
