Summary

Egg prices are projected to rise by 41% in 2025, according to the USDA, following an already steep increase due to a severe bird flu outbreak that reduced egg-laying hen populations.

The current average price per dozen is nearly $5, with some areas seeing prices as high as $10. Restaurants like Waffle House and Denny's have added surcharges.

Meanwhile, the USDA mistakenly fired key bird flu response workers, sparking criticism.

Trump stated his administration will take action but has offered no specifics.

Why does it feel like I'm reading articles about egg prices virtually every day. I don't get why anyone cares this much.

USDA mistakenly fired key bird flu response workers

No. No they didn't.

They fired people to try to free money for more tax breaks for the top 1% with zero concern if these people were needed or useful.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 41 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Close: they are enemies of the United States acting out of malice toward the goal of weakening the United States.

We are under attack.

[–] commander@lemmings.world 22 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

They are enemies of the US, their goal is to weaken it, and we are under attack.

That said, they care about enriching themselves and their loyal buddies more than anything else.

"It's easier to fool a man than to convince him he'd been fooled." - Mark Twain

Look at how insanely difficult, if not impossible, our job is at educating these morons on how they're being taken for a ride by conmen. The longer it goes on the more they'd have to admit they're wrong about, which makes it even less likely they'll realize it.

Being a useful idiot is really a sunk-cost fallacy on a life scale.

…even less likely…

Take it back take it back 😭

Nuclear weapons? Nah I think it should have happened by now if it was going to. The government needs to selectively kill some of us, because if it killed all of us there would be no one left to enslave.

Thank goodness the Orange turd is right on this in the front lines of tossing paper towels at people!

[–] tiefling@lemmy.blahaj.zone 18 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Clearly the solution is to ban trans people from existing

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

And as a bonus for banning trans people, they think they'll go to heaven for being good little bigots for god.

Tofu scramble is pretty good. Firm or extra firm tofu block, slice and crumble into a bowl. 1 tbsp turmeric, 1 tbsp black pepper, 1 tbsp garlic powder, mix. Cook in a pan on medium stirring occasionally, will turn yellow as it heats up. Then add key ingredient black salt (kala namak, a salt with a strong sulfur flavor) to taste. Mix in with your pan fry mix of choice, I like onion/garlic/serrano/mushroom/smoked paprika/chili powder/spinach/tomato and green pepper/cilantro added at the end. Serve with fruit and toast.

Deep fried tofu with peanut sauce is like crack.

We got chickens when facing an egg crisis here in NZ. Lovely little animals. It's been nice being able to look after and care for these creatures, knowing they are living the good life whilst consuming their eggs. Much more useful than my dumb dog.

[–] WindyRebel@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, but isn’t the upkeep of chickens pricey? People I know that raise them say it is. I don’t have chickens, so I’m not sure. Maybe it’s different in America?

I switched everyone to oatmeal breakfasts and leftovers in flour tortilla. Haven't had complaints. I also have done mild( half a jalapeno for flavor) chilaquiles in a torta, or sub sandwich bread, for a savory breakfast.

I use avocado for creamyness and use whatever protein leftovers I have.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 25 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

If eggs were 6/dozen, and prices rose to 10/dozen... that's already a 40% increase.

so like....

yeah. I'd take that bet.

[–] jewbacca117@lemmy.world 36 points 20 hours ago (1 children)
[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 12 points 20 hours ago

you're right. it's actually a 66% increase. Still. point stands. it's a bet I'd win.

[–] astrsk@fedia.io 14 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

… except it’s not.

$6 * 1.40 = $8.40

[–] capital_sniff@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

So these monsters are screwing us on the price of eggs and the math on the price of eggs!

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Uh...I don't think that's right. 40% of 6 is 2.4, so it'd be $8.40/dozen

Granted, I agree that $10 a dozen seems very possible at this point

[–] THB@lemmy.world 6 points 19 hours ago (3 children)
[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 3 points 19 hours ago

For me it's more in the 6-10 range, the cheapest store brand are 5 something. They're saying wholesale is averaging $8 at this point

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Damn, and I thought seeing around $10 here was bad.

I remember buying a pack of 18 for $0.30 (pre-covid) and now the same pack cost $9-$10

[–] LostXOR@fedia.io 6 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Can you buy egg futures? Because that's one heck of an APR!

[–] baldingpudenda@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Don't worry, shit is already priced in. Even if it goes up, you still won't make money.

[–] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

There going to hit a dollar an egg some places in Seattle at this rate

[–] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

$0.75 at the Fred Meyers already, it's already getting ridiculous.

[–] Loduz_247@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago

Now the minimum wage will be measured in eggs

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 4 points 17 hours ago

Guys, I think I figured it out, the Republicans expected the variables that stores the prices to roll over once they got beyond the max allowed value and reset back to minimum.

The devs seems to have patched that exploit however...

[–] nomugisan@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

In other news, you can have hens in your back yard!

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 8 points 18 hours ago

Look at this rich guy here that can afford a yard.

We need to switch to farming non-avian eggs.

tbh at this rate, eggs are going to be more expensive than the substitutions
