I caught this in theater and it was really an experience. The sound was designed to rotate speakers around the audience in the third act to add to the disorienting effect of the lighthouse. I can't say I love the movie overall, though I appreciate how ambitious it is, but it was the kind of theater experience that took me back to being a kid and watching the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park on the big screen. I haven't had the heart to watch it since in case it doesn't hold up on my humble home system.

The weird ambiguous ending is something I really appreciate about this movie.
One of the best endings. The music was also incredible.
Highly recommend the first book that the movie was based on. To a certain extent enjoyed the two sequels of the original trilogy.
Jeff Vandermere just released a new prequel book called Absolution that was a little bit tougher of a read for me for some reason (probably because it has been nearly 8 years since I read the original series), but still fascinating if you like the area X books.
He has some other weird fiction books that are definitely worth scoping out too: Borne is very different from annihilation but the characters have really stuck in my head since I read it. Almost everything he touches seems to touch on humanity’s relationship with the environment.
Just picked it up today over lunch! Quick side note: I love the covers for these books - really eye-catching
I hope you enjoy! It’s kinda like an environmentalist’s Roadside Picnic.
One of my favorite movies ever. I just loved everything about it. Very weird
Also great soundtrack
