Oh, I've seen this one. where's scientology Tom in this episode?

[–] ExtravagantEnzyme@lemm.ee 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Or the bald predictor gals laying in water?

The precogs were FMM. They were named after famous crime fiction authors, Agatha (Christie), Dash (Dashiell Hammett), and Arthur (Conan Doyle).

[–] ka1ikasan@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Didn't know that, that's cool!

[–] Karyoplasma@discuss.tchncs.de 60 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Guilty until proven innocent.

It’s how the police view you anyway.

Data scientist here; there simply are not enough murders to model this, so they will need to use proxies for “likely” murderers (like any sort of violent crime). That means the model will very strongly target people who are over-policed (minorities) and those more likely to actually get caught and charged for things, and thus be in the training data set (poor people). It will also fail spectacularly for this purpose because even a highly accurate model will produce almost 100% false positives -again, because actual murders are so vanishingly rare. The math just doesn’t work.

I give it two seconds to turn into racism machine

[–] Junkernaught@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago

And those two seconds are just the boot sequence.

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 33 points 2 months ago

Let me guess: Palantir

[–] FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website 29 points 2 months ago

Will this drive the first wrongfully accused person to suicide or will it just somehow, magically, target all brown and black people? Stay tuned to see how much taxpayer money gets sunk into this tool.

[–] wise_pancake@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 months ago

Prediction: this gets used to surveil dissidents and minorities disproportionately.

[–] quickenparalysespunk@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 2 months ago (3 children)

apparently Uk govt has never played watch dogs legion, nor seen Equilibrium (C Bale movie), nor Minority Report, nor Richard III, nor read Brave New World, nor the billion other movies, novels, games, poems, songs, Banksy art, social videos, cave paintings, etc that specifically warned UK not to (re)become the villain (over and over again)

it's like the 2nd most popular culture topic.... after "love" or something

but noooo, just had to be edgelordsandladies.gov.uk

.........

"What can we do to improve society, I know I'll watch some dystopian SciFi for ideas" - the UK government probably

[–] AnotherHelldiver@jlai.lu 2 points 2 months ago

Psycho Pass.

Another one to the list. Great anime. It's like if Blade Runner and Minority Report had a loving relationship and a beautiful child was the byproduct of this union.

[–] Kobo@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Fuck around, find out, double down

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Healthcare CEOs at the top of the list.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

if the model is working correctly it indeed must point us towards billionaires

[–] skrlet13@feddit.cl 21 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Psycho Pass called, you missed its point

"UK developing new hybrid non lethal/lethal weapon that will use murder risk prediction score to select operating mode. This amazing invention will cut down on police related deaths, learn more tonight on BBC."

I swear the UK is as dystopian as the US and even worse in a lot of ways.

[–] PowerCrazy@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I swear the UK is as dystopian as the US and even worse in a lot of ways.

It literally always has been and that fact is why the US even exists.

[–] Zetta@mander.xyz 2 points 2 months ago

Good point, didn't think about it like that haha

[–] Pirata@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago

Why do you think they wanted Brexit? Now they can apply all their demented ideas to their country freely.

I, for one, haven't set foot there since Brexit officially concluded. Shame that I have friends there but, I hear it's becoming worse by the day anyways.

They should make three, and they all have to agree, but if only one disagrees then maybe they can ignore it, call it the "minority account" or something like that.

[–] bigkahuna1986@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

The "less report". Blamo.

[–] considine@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago

You're not going to believe this, but Tom Cruise... has identified you as an agent of Xenu.

[–] Pirata@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Sounds like a great idea for a film. I have the feeling it would become an instant cult classic.

I shit you not, my mom literally just was talking about that anime and joking about it with me last night. I think it's because we were talking about police anime.

Like if I knew Lemmy didn't have an algorithm, I'd think this shit was targeted.

[–] Korkki@lemmy.ml 12 points 2 months ago

Will the British cabinet be automatically included on the list?

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 11 points 2 months ago

There's no possible way this could go badly.

[–] Kobo@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] Chais@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Right? No way this could possibly backfire. Unless, of course, that's the intended outcome.

[–] Tangentism@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's typical of the neolib Labour party.

They've recently reintroduced legislation for digital IDs, just as they did the previous time they were in govt (prior to 2010).

We also have police stepping up unregulated use of facial reignition camera on the streets

They are obsessed with authoritarianism.

Welcome to our over-securitized late stage capitalist hellscape. All so companies can push out these bogus 'tools' and eat more of the state budget and profit like the crony capitalists they are. Not the first time. First as a tragedy, second as a farce.

Major black mirror vibes

Is this turning into minority report in real life?

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Isn't this the TV show Person of Interest?

[–] 1hitsong@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

You are being watched...

[–] surph_ninja@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

So are they going to enforce ICC warrants?

[–] variaatio@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 months ago

Is it April fools? please still be April's fools, checks calendar, dammit, not April's fools still. It's actually news.

[–] orphigle@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 months ago

I hope many of their politicians get placed high on the list.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I watch enough true crime to know that anyone is capable of murder

[–] JamesBoeing737MAX@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

Yay, concentration camps. My list of countries to live in is consistently getting smaller.
