BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina’s right-wing President Javier Milei issued a decree on Wednesday curbing immigration to the South American nation, a move coinciding with the immigration restrictions put in place by the Trump administration.

Yeah you know, back in the 1920s when Argentina was booming because of the giant population growth from immi...grants. Shit

Has Argentina ever even had an immigration problem, ever? This dude's level of grovelling to tramp is insane.

In the mid 40s there definitely was a huge problem with criminals immigrating to Argentina.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 5 points 15 hours ago

Yeah, but not THOSE immigrants, of course, only the less white ones

[–] mmcintyre@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It seems problematic to me, tho maybe not to them, that they had a whole bunch of Nazis migrate to Argentina. Sure, that was a long time ago, but you asked if they ever had a problem with it.

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

yea, they never complained about immigration until now for some reason :/ that's the joke, I guess

Plenty of countries have some degree of immigration issues whenever there are worse off countries near by, which is true for most countries.

For example, the president of the Dominican Republic is doing the same thing right now to deport Haitians back to their half of the island.

Its insane how many mini Trumps there are

But that's the nonsensical part: Argentina historically only had significant immigration when its economy was booming, they don't have much now, do they?

[–] kadup@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

With the entirety of South America to choose from, who the hell migrates to Argentina?

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 64 points 1 day ago (1 children)

How very original of him.

All these far-right governments making their countries great again must be why the world feels so great right now. It's clearly working very well indeed.

Probably feels great to be a billionaire sociopath

People did nazi that coming

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

Bit late for those Nazis now

Because THAT'S the person that you look at and think "yup, that's my role model, he's awesome!"... What's wrong with people, seriously...

[–] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What the fuck does that even mean? Like Juan Manuel de Rosas era, Evita era, giant sloth and terror bird era, or some other era? Like, I love Argentina and have been to Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls. It’s a beautiful country full of beautiful people. But what is the time period dumbfucks there have created some sort of lore around?

In the U.S., the right romanticizes the days of polio and scarlet fever and stupid wars and pretends it was basically the movie Grease. What’s the Argentine equivalent?

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

Hands down, clearly the terror bird era.

Spending money in bringing back the Patagorhacos terrificus will solve every single problem Argentina has (or maybe just make them smaller in comparison).

Plus, what if Uruguay or Brazil start their own terror bird programs? If Argentina invests now in phorusrhacids, they will have the upper hand and more time for a stable population.

Maybe these right-wingers miss the time when they could just kidnap leftists, students, intellectuals and anyone else they didn't like, and throw them out of a plane into the sea?

Argentina has always been known for being the most European country in South America, plus the Nazi immigration back in the day couldn't have helped...

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 4 points 1 day ago

Argentina is the clear example of why you should never ever mix Italians and Spaniards. Their combination brings economic calamity and delicious food.

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

I mean Argentina has a history of facism, xenophobia, and racism. Not like they learned anything new from trump
