I think what really grabbed people's attention is that he kept refusing to explain why he wanted to do that.

Whatever his reason was, it was such a stupid thing to be memeing about that I felt at home here right away. Edit: this was a while back now, during the first big migration from reddit after the API change protests.

[–] Ceruleum@lemmy.wtf 4 points 12 hours ago

Pooping good, not pooping bad.

[–] altima_neo@lemmy.zip 9 points 15 hours ago

There was also that one wave of denim covered everything.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

There were the German Sturgeons

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 37 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I remember a bit of Bean Jean overlap, and I've seen a bean lamp recently, but no jean lamp yet.

[–] pressedhams@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 20 hours ago

Bean the lamp you want to jean in the world.

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 31 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Billy bean is not my jean

She's just some bean

Claiming I am the lamp

[–] baggins@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If a moth wore jeans

Would it wear them like this

Or like this

[–] ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

If a moth wore jeans

It would definitely be

Wearing them right now

Don’t forget Van week!

[–] jawa22@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

It wasn't a week, btw. It was three days.

[–] match@pawb.social 12 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Not pooping for 3 days followed by pooping for 3 days straight

[–] EpeeGnome@feddit.online 4 points 14 hours ago

If I recall correctly, the follow up was the same person complaining about being painfully constipated for several days.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 5 points 16 hours ago

And then came the beans..

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 24 points 23 hours ago

And you still won't explain why!

[–] EpeeGnome@feddit.online 10 points 23 hours ago

It's been a while, so I must have exaggerated it in my mind. Three days certainly sounds more plausible.

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 43 points 1 day ago

Don’t forget about that month of antique memes

I miss the days of wizard orbs. That weekend was pure bliss for me.

[–] razorcandy@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I missed out on “not pooping for a week” being the hot topic but there is more potential for funny answers to that than whatever is going on with moths and beans right now. And if you want to not poop for a week, I’ve heard opioids are effective.

[–] MightBeAlpharius@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It was more the lack of an explanation that hooked people, rather than just the not pooping - IIRC, we never ended up getting any real explanation for why this guy needed to not poop for a week.

It was honestly pretty great, people came up with everything from "he's smuggling himself internationally in a shipping container" to "he's determined to be the winner in a really weird Mr Beast video" to "he's giving up on society to live with the sloths" before it started to turn into kind of a circle-jerk.

And of course, suggestions for stopping the poop included butt plugs, eating only cheese, butt plugs, a liquid diet, and more butt plugs.

[–] Broadfern@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago

Didn’t it turn out he was making a pilgrimage to Mecca and didn’t want to use public bathrooms or some such?

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Nope, the poop thing was only entertaining as long as the one poster who started it kept it alive. The beans and jeans thing were both funny for a couple of weeks.

This moth thing is better than all of those combined. So many clever moth based memes expanding beyond the starting moth loves lamps starting point.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago

Beans were a good nonsensical way to show people how this whole federation thing works, and to start something rolling. Other memes haven't quite hit the same mark, as they're trying to redo something already done. The moth thing though, I've seen some pretty good ones among the expected. One doesn't create a great meme, it comes to life on its own, often after a lot of misses.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

clever

You use that word…

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Yes, lost of excellent wordplay and context based punchlines. Absolute comedy gold.

Big tiddy moth girl is Shakespeare level humor.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

i'm pretty sure beans will never die

[–] Zenith@lemm.ee 5 points 18 hours ago

They’re both deep underwater skeletons and have been for like a decade idk why something that’s like ancient internet history is being treated like something new, Lemmy is an alternate universe or something

[–] diemartin@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago

¿Qué pasó con los memes en otros idiomas?

[–] idunnololz@lemmy.world 10 points 22 hours ago

Taylor swift

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 19 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I think what really grabbed people's attention is that he kept refusing to explain why he wanted to do that.

That’s what did it for me. I kept wondering how the reason could possibly be worse or more embarrassing than the question itself.

I thought that “music festival” was a great guess. Those porta-johns get nasty.

[–] SwingingTheLamp@midwest.social 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

My guess was cave exploration. He said he was going to a remote area where pooping was an option, but he didn't want to, which makes sense when you know you've gotta carry that shit out with you in your cave pack. There are only a handful of scientific cave expeditions that go into caves for three days, so I figured that if he said so, he would unequivocally dox himself.

[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 4 points 9 hours ago

Another good one! Not wanting to dox himself explains the motivation to hide the reason, which was the biggest mystery.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] magnetosphere@fedia.io 7 points 1 day ago

Yes it was. Bonus points for taking timing into account!

[–] MightBeAlpharius@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What if the concern wasn't that he would have to use a disgusting bathroom, but rather that he takes horrible shits and didn't want someone to know?

I mean, I'd certainly be embarrassed to have to tell the internet something like "I'm visiting my in-laws for a few days, and I really want them to like me. The problem is that I shit like a farm animal, and they only have one bathroom."

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 21 hours ago

Literally everybody poops. It does not need to be a source of shame, EVERYONE does it.

[–] JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

Someone's out here documenting all the Lemmy lore right?

Only real OGs remember the Lemmy nopoop challenge

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He deleted it! The post is still around, but all the associated comments are gone. Does anybody know if it was all archived?

I suppose it's possible but I doubt it lol

[–] TomMasz@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Seems like it simultaneously last week and also a decade ago.

[–] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Appleseuss@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Same comrade, same.

I don't remember really remember this but there was apparently also a debate around whether bathing was environmentally friendly going on around the same time
