It was the parliament which contained no representatives from the colonies, therefore nobody to stand up for them in political talks. TBF, buying into that propaganda isn't unlike believing that the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't in fact a thinly-veiled maneuver to legalize slavery via incarceration.
