Explains the rightwing pipeline better.

[–] three@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago (4 children)

True no one other than right wing lunatics workout and consume protein shakes

[–] falidorn@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (3 children)

I have no idea why that comment has so many upvotes. I’m with you; I honestly don’t understand the logic.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

dumb people make vast generalizations about anyone they disagree with, and smash together undesirable traits into caricatures, so they can feel superior to them.

[–] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You've had too much lead to follow the logic of a simple quip.

Lead lowers your IQ, making more idiots.

More people are taking protein powders that have lead.

Republicans have taken over the government.

Republicans are idiots.

There are enough Republicans to take over the government, because thanks to lead in protein their are enough idiots to vote them in.

It's not just that lead exposure lowers iq - it directly lowers inhibitions against violence.

right wing bad! updoots to the left

Too many reddit refugees karma farming and hoping they can sell their accounts for tens of dollars to some ad agency 15 years down the road.

[–] PearOfJudes@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 days ago

This isn't true gang.

[–] the_q@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

I'm pretty sure I didn't say that.

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com -2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No, but if you consume protein shakes enough then your mental capacity will decline, thus adding to the pipeline of dumbasses.

I feel bad I had to explain that to you.

[–] three@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 days ago

True all protein shakes cause you to get dumber

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Probably on purpose

[–] burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 2 days ago

The responses of the companies are infuriating. I am so sick of corporations giving blandness and absolving themselves of responsibility in the most patronizing tone possible.

[–] bigfondue@lemmy.world 34 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Very interesting, and concerning that the plant based proteins are highest in lead. I am like halfway through 2 kilos of soy protein right now...

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

plant proteins are cheaper and lower quality than whey protein.

also plants adsorb lead from the soil. they don't filter it out.

so cheap protein has high level of lead....

[–] bigfondue@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yea, but is a little surprising since the cows are eating plants. Usually pollutants become more concentrated the higher up the food chain the organism is.

[–] Prathas@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Stop now; better late than never!

[–] limer@lemmy.ml 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So many American health products have so many things wrong with them; perhaps the safest thing to do is never consume any supplements without doing homework.

Not just protein supplements but many fiber aids, and other things next to the daily vitamins sold in the store. One can seriously harm oneself going on a health food fad, diet or trend

[–] plz1@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

And also the daily vitamins, which contain fillers of varying sketchiness. This is what happens when the FDA primarily relies on the industry to self-regulate. The only risk to those companies is being sued, and the only risk in that is them being caught.

[–] starblursd@lemmy.zip 26 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Not me freaking out as a huel black consumer of 3 years

[–] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago

Go to your doctor and let them know, they may think blood tests would be worth doing. If your lead blood levels are high they can treat it to stop more damage from occurring.

[–] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lmao same.

But isn't Huel UK based?

[–] miked@piefed.social 1 points 17 hours ago

Doesn't matter where the company is based. All companies source their ingredients world-wide.

[–] Naz@sh.itjust.works -2 points 2 days ago

An important question for science, what Linux distro are you currently on?

And if not Linux, what OS do you use?

Brings microphone uncomfortably close

[–] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That would explain the short tempers and reduced cognitive capabilities of my friends who guzzle that stuff.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

That's just a consequence of eating too much protien.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

This is just the free market at work. They all should have tested every shake and powder themselves to ensure that there was no lead. Smh my head.

[–] FauxPseudo@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

Yet another harmless supplement to add to your list of doesn't contain what it says or contains things it doesn't say.

[–] sangeteria@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Does anyone know any "safe" brands? I skimmed the article and couldn't find any recommendations. I already use whey so that's the lower risk category but still

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

The lead will protect me balls from 5G.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 2 days ago

Good advice, thanks

[–] hkspowers@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

That's why you have to do research and not just trust the labels. Labdoor (a third party testing site) has lots of proteins tested, lead and other heavy metals are part of the testing.
https://labdoor.com/rankings/protein

[–] potpotato@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not exactly comprehensive and odd that they all scored A+

[–] hkspowers@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That really is strange. I just checked and the list is not the same as it was when I posted the link.🤔 Not sure what's going on with the site, but I have seen many products get poor marks on there. I remember when optimum nutrition protein failed because of heavy metals. They used to show the full reports for free, now you need a membership to the site to see the full reports.

[–] Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

19 products and most from the same few brands. None of the most popular brands are in here. Doesn't seem very useful.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Maybe that’s why so many forced ads come up pushing for folks to use more and scoop it right into their mouth so they absorb more. Doesn’t make us dumb fast enough.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wonder if they buy the raw material for cheaper because it could not be sold in most markets due to its lead content.

[–] YerbaYerba@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Most of the bad ones are "plant based". Maybe extracting the protein also concentrates any trace lead.

[–] causepix@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

There's a section about this in the article. Plants take up lead from the soil they grow in (This phenomenon is actually well known and sometimes employed to decontaminate soil in brownfields; those plants aren't used for human consumption though obvs) However, the companies don't disclose where their raw goods are sourced from so it's impossible to know for sure.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 4 points 2 days ago (3 children)

This protein trend is dumb anyways who needs a protein latte or a proteini?

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This. Protein is like the easiest nutrient to satisfy. The requirement is very, very low.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I fucking hate protein doughnuts too.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 2 days ago

Well, you're probably not getting any nutrition from a doughnut.

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I have pretty awful digestive issues, so meal replacement protein shakes are honestly one of the few options I can consistently have for lunches at work.

It's not all muscle-bound dudes drinking these, some of us actually need 'em. If I didn't drink them I'd have a massive protein deficiency.

[–] Makhno@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You'd need to care about exercise and your body for the trend to be useful for you

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No.

The protein trend is separating fools from their money by selling them something they don't need.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

if you do any serious working out you need protein supplements. I'm glad you don't. but those of us that do find them invaluable for recovery and muscle growth.

i don't consume plant protein though, it's nasty and not very good. i only do whey protein.

No one needs protein supplements.

[–] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Talk to an average gymbro alpha male and it's entirely unsurprising.
