Technically it's not illegal to carry lets say 100 kroner worth in 50 øre in a sock and then tie a knot on it. Unfortunately it's a bit heavy, but you can get some really good hits in with very little force.
It is also legal to have on of the devices that sounds a very loud alarm, some of them can't even be shut off unless deactivated by app or fingerprint.

One of reasons Denmark is generally safe, is because things like this is not respected. That's apparently really difficult for some people to understand.
Your reasoning is basically, that your friend do not want to involve the police, and that makes it OK. It's pretty easy to guess what kind of behavior got him into this mess in the first place.

Dude. This has happened before. Police did nothing. Friend almost committed suicide... twice. And more people said their clothes were consensual than those who helped (practically nobody).

I don't want to spill all the details, but this friend has nobody to talk to, doesn't trust the police based on past experiences with the same topic, and has recently experienced some very very bad stuff. I've tried convincing them to talk to someone but there's nothing that can be done about that.

No freedom here has ever been bought with blood, so we (imo) don't care too much about the upholding of our rights and safety, instead naively entrusting such things entirely to the state.

Pepper spray. I think that's it. You can't carry around a knife, knuckles, any kind of cudgel or anything. It's all illegal, at least without a permit. You may even need a permit to carry pepper spray. Look it up on the Danish police's website.
Also, Denmark is still a safe country, even though your friend had a bad experience.

I'm pretty sure you are allowed to carry a small pocket knife outside of so called visitations zoner (areas where you can get searched randomly) and ofcourse bars clubs and other places where a knife logically shouldn't be brought.
Would never recomend a knife for self defense though as the saying goes : the attacker might die on the streets but you will die in the hospital.
I personally always carry a small knife on my person for utility uses here and there but I have never reached for it in a self defense situation as I am not remotely trained for that scenario.
The only legal thing I can think of would be a high candela flashlight and some good running shoes.

Firmly agree with you on this. Now the second ingredient that forms the base of my opinion is a statement I will make right now: The criminal element will always be a step ahead of Civilians in the weapons department. Whatever civilians can legally carry, the criminal element will carry something worse.
I get it, someone mugging you with a pepper spray when you have nothing sucks. But if I give you a pepper spray, next thing that happens is you get mugged by someone with a piece. I give you a piece, he shows you a picture of your daughter in middle school. Stop the arms race between civilians and criminals.
