Outrage has erupted in India after a Muslim professor was arrested over a social media post which praised India's military operations against Pakistan while criticising attacks on Indian Muslims.

Ali Khan Mahmudabad, 42, is a British-educated associate professor of political science at Ashoka University. He studied at Winchester College, a boarding school in England, and earned a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2014.

Mahmudabad was arrested on Sunday in New Delhi after a complaint was filed against him by a youth leader of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Rights groups and prominent commentators have erupted in outrage. Aakar Patel, the chair of Amnesty International India, said: "Mahmudabad is in jail not because of what he wrote but because he's Muslim."

Looking at the logs, it seems like they removed @mukt@lemmy.ml. This is actually pretty bad. !india@lemmy.ml had 2 mods, one of them is hardly active and @mukt@lemmy.ml, despite not being very diligent at his job, was at least active here.

I was already loosing my interest in the lemmy.ml community. I feel like I should now just leave it altogether.

Justice Yashwant Varma has refused to resign from the Delhi High Court despite a Supreme Court-appointed panel confirming a large cash recovery from his residence. The process to impeach him is set to start soon.

The enquiry committee confirmed the recovery of cash from the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, who was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court, following a fire incident on March 14. Based on the panel’s report submitted to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Varma was given the option to either resign or face impeachment proceedings.

Hafiz Abdul Rauf, a US-designated global terrorist, was seen conducting prayers in the presence of uniformed Pakistan Army personnel and members of the banned Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) of Hafiz Saeed on Wednesday (May 6). They attended the funeral of three persons killed in the military strikes by Indian armed forces on terror camps in Muridke.

He is also a UN designated terrorist, a member of Lashkar e Tayyaba, an organisation considered a terrorist group by the US, EU, Australia, Canada, Russia and the UN. The Markaz camp at Muridke was a hide-out for the World Trade Center bombers of 1993. It was also the training center of 26/11/2008 attacks in Mumbai, according to Ajmal Kasab, David Headley, a key conspirator, and Tahawuur Rana, who recently lost the case against his extradition in the US and was transferred from his jail in the US on India's extradition request.
