There's always that one other guy that looks briefly at the code for the small chance to point fingers at some unethical, malicious or dangerous practices.

No one really, for small projects. But am advantage is if the development turns for the worst then anybody that's capable can fork it and go on another direction.

Who audits niche closed source apps like Sync?

I'm not extolling virtues of an Sync's code. I also don't understand why a lot of people automatically think that open source is better "because anyone can look at it". All I'm saying that to me it's much of a muchness. I don't understand code so open or closed it's not a draw card for me.
