I was gonna say don’t you guys have like 1-2 mass shootings a day in the states? Not trying to be facetious here, genuinely asking. Because if it was like that in my country I’d have to become numb about it or go insane.

Well we don't know because the republiQan party has maintained for a long time that the government explicitly not track them.

Who knows why? It's a mystery!

I don't think it's quite 1-2/day. But for a tiny bit of context there was one at a high school in Dallas either yesterday or the day before.

Mass shootings yes, school shootings specifically no.

"There have been more than 488 mass shootings across the US so far in 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. Their figures include shootings that happen in homes and in public places.

For each of the last four years there have been more than 600 mass shootings - almost two a day on average. "

The definition for a mass shooting is an "incident in which four or more people were killed or injured".

I stand corrected!

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

With about 600 events to be called mass shootings a year, 1-2 a day is correct.

Not like this, where random people are targeted by someone lashing out indiscriminately. Most of the statistics on mass shootings are gang related. These ones hit a little different so they are much bigger stories.

I am absolutely numb to the shootings to a degree The amount of gun crime in America you would think we should all personally know someone who has been shot at before.

Yes, but you also can't compare Netherlands to the USA apples to apples. You could maybe compare 2 New Jersey's to the Netherlands in terms of density and size, and yeah Netherlands would easily win, but I guess I'm just trying to say that the USA is closer a group of countries in a continent, than a bunch of states in a country.

What a pile of bullshit.

Add up mass shootings in all of Europe then. Guess what? The numbers will still pale in comparison.

Yeah, I agree. Compare Europe to the US, that makes sense. Europe wins hands down.

Netherlands also wins hands down, but it's not a fair comparison to make.

I’m in Canada. I’m comparing green apples to red apples.

I'll trade you some rotten red apples for one drop of syrup.
