Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

This is not debate club. Unless it’s amusing debate.

Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

(Credit and/or blame to David Gerard for starting this.)

Promptfondlers on lobste.rs are unhappy about the tag "vibecoding", used to denote development using GenAI. I'd not recommend reading the thread, just want to observe that if slop coding had actually taken the coding world by storm, I doubt there would be much pearl clutchign about how slop-slingers are treated on the site. We're talking about people willing to pay Scam Altman money monthly after all.

shoutouts to @dgerard@awful.systems and @mawhrin@circumstances.run for reminding me that Steve Klabnik being really shitty isn’t a temporary state of affairs

@self @gerikson today i learned about existence of one richard feldman, programmer, podcaster, author of the roc language and quite a vicious promoter of the confabulation machines.

you'd be entirely unsurprised to see him quote lunduke as an information source.

[–] gerikson@awful.systems 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah I noticed him too.

Lots of quite old accounts that haven't posted in years appear in those comments.

In contrast, the ones in the threads appealing the ban of friendlysock were a bit newer.

@self @gerikson (but yeah, klabnik appealing for bans the first moment he got a friendly reply from the mods there is quite impressive too.)

steve klabnik on lobste dot rs appealing for bans the first moment he got friendly attention of the mods: “You’re welcome. Been having a lot of feelings about here lately, due to both this and the friendlysock ban (you may or may not remember, but I quit using the site for six years due to his behavior). To be clear, I think the ban is fine, even though he and I came to a thing closer to understanding recently, but the kind of behavior regularly on display in LLM related threads feels like it would be ban worthy in threads about any other topic. I’m not sure why it gets such a pass, especially when the site is clearly willing to ban users for bad behavior (which to be clear, I do think is a good thing). Honestly I think banning the topic would make this community look better, I think, at this point. But also maybe I’m overreacting, I dunno, this thread in particular has caused me a lot of… something, today. Maybe I’ll write more or DM you later, maybe even in a few days.”

he now pretends he didn't appeal for banning participants in the discussion, just the topic.

i shouldn't, but i'm really disappointed finding out how much a nasty manipulative little shit he is.

[–] gerikson@awful.systems 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I know think the endgoal is for them to convince the mods that anything critical of GenAI is off topic and they should nuke the comments. Just "neutral" discourse, please, "we only care about the technology".

Given that mod pushcx was the one who actually added the tag in the first place, I'm not sure their cunning plan will work, but who knows?

At least the About page has had more visitors than any other time in the site's history...

it's a pure reputation laundering attempt, and should be recognized as such. (lol, got really heavily flagged there.)

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 2 points 1 day ago

yeah as I posted elsewhere on fedi, all of this feels like reputation and perception laundering (as I see flere also says below)

I wish them much moan and a very cry, but they shouldn't get away with this nonsense

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 2 points 1 day ago

I'd only seen some of his other writing previously, and even that was full of some "oh woe is me" uwu burnout shit (which read tonedeaf as fuck to me, knowing this fucker probably barely had their means impacted by that), but this... ugh. ranking any of his shit even lower now
