- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.

" Europe is in a fight. A fight for a continent that is whole and at peace. For a free and independent Europe. A fight for our values and our democracies. A fight for our liberty and our ability to determine our destiny for ourselves. Make no mistake – this is a fight for our future.
I thought long and hard about whether to start this State of the Union address with such a stark appraisal.
After all, we Europeans are not used to – or comfortable with – talking in such terms. Because our Union is fundamentally a peace project. But the truth is that the world of today is unforgiving. And we cannot varnish over the difficulties that Europeans feel every day. They can feel the ground shift beneath them. They can feel things getting harder just as they are working harder. They can feel the impact of the global crisis. Of the higher cost of living. They feel the speed of change affecting their lives and careers.
And they worry about the endless spiral of events they see on the news – from the devastating scenes in Gaza to the relentless Russian barrage on Ukraine.
We simply cannot wait for this storm to pass."
So Europe will fight the billionaires who use their surplus money to buy real estate and drive up prices instead of investing in new companies to create more and better paying jobs?
So we will conquer Africa and Asia and force the countries to sell their resources below market value again?
The war in Ukraine increases our cost of living because we have stopped buying cheap russian gas and oil. We wanted to replace them anyway. We have to build and create to drive down costs, not fight. We will fight to free Ukraine, but that won't bring down costs.
Besides, the war in Ukraine allowed us to let friendly forces conquer Syria which stood in the way of building a pipeline to Qatar for even cheaper gas.
The big threat is Chinese progress which will take all of our high tech jobs when the world chooses their products over ours. Are we going to create or to fight to stay on top?
At least in Italy, price are high because is impossibily hard to retake a rented house in case of a bad tenant, so people keep houses empty, which add to the fact that in most places there is no more space to build new ones.
