I've lost plenty of people in my life and that only makes me feel sympathy for his situation. Roscoe clearly means a lot to him. Dogs are social animals, they become members of families, they love people and animals, they experience emotions and pain. How can you be so heartless?
Dogs are animals. Predators to some, food to others. Whatever emotions you see in them is nothing but a reflection of your own expectations. Stop treating them like they were humans.
Humans are animals
As another commenter already said, we're also animals. Why would humans be the only beings who deserve empathy and love? A dog is no human, but they're also capable of building a bond with humans and likewise the other way around. They recognize us, share in our emotions, and take part in out lives. Such a loss hurts all the same.
