That typo surprises me - I associate it with trying to type on a cell phone.
A gazillion years ago my teacher at uni wrote this on the blackboard (might've been a whiteboard, don't remember):
Paris in the
the spring
He then proceeded to ask random people to read it out loud. This went on for several minutes, while I was in the back row listening to all these people repeating "Paris in the spring" and losing my mind thinking I was hallucinating the second "the".
Conclusion: not a new thing at all, humans have always been clumsy fools, thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Edit: I just realised I messed up the formatting on the crucial part of this post. See above: clumsy fool
It has always been easy to miss seeing the repeated word, but it's not easy to accidentally write a repeated word by hand. I only do it (as far as I know) when I'm typing with auto-complete. (And I'm not even sure why auto-complete has that problem.)
Just a matter of being distracted for a second ("will pounce on.... What? Uhuh? [...on on on...] Yeah, cool, bye. What was I writing? Oh yeah: '... on you....'". And then you proofread and miss the repeated word.

I support this motion.
Where?
pounce on on you
Wow I read it like 3 times
