Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

I'd guess Australian summer is still more annoying

Nah it's way worse than you'd think, we get biblical level swarms of bugs, magpies turn into into kamikaze bombers with knives for feet, you can't trust anything laying on the floor at all, because it's more than likely a snake or one of many big lizards chilling out, you can't trust hiding under trees because our snakes like to climb trees and divebomb humans or just fall off like idiots, the sun has personal beef with Australia for some reason, not sure what we did, but it's pissed at us.

So far this week, I've seen 3 bobtail lizards, one brought inside by my pug, one blue tongue lizard that made me nope the fuck back inside, it was his yard for a while and the magpies have been taunting me every time I go check the mail, so they're gonna attack me any day now, it's not even summer yet, all of that on my own property.

The earth created an island far off to isolate the most dangerous creatures and people were like "this is where I want to live"

I can understand the aborigines because they probably got stuck and couldn't leave. But everyone else that came afterwards?

It's also a reminder how humans destroy animal habitats and call them aggressive. We caused extinction of so many animals, birds, insect that weren't, so can you really blame them?

Many of them didn't have much of a choice, as it was a penal colony.

I've heard about the magpies, are the lizards friendly?

[–] dumbass@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

are the lizards friendly?

They're friendlier than the snakes are, a bit. But if they get ya, they lock jaw on you and good luck getting it off ya and you'll have an infected wound for sure, they will jump to bite you, they're slow walking but man can they jump fast.

I'm less scared of them.

What the fuck?! 😭

The lizards are friendlier here in North America. Most snakes where I live won't kill you. I've seen a copperhead in the wild maybe once. I quite like reptiles. I'm a big fan of Steve Irwin and Vegemite btw.
