I just realized how fucked up that child's game of hangman where you try to guess/spell a word by slowly drawing in a stick figure and guessing letters.

Edit: yup just looked it up, and there it is. Wikipedia: hangman#history:

Though the origins of the game are unknown, a variant is mentioned in a book of children's games assembled by Alice Gomme in 1894 called Birds, Beasts, and Fishes.[1] This version lacks the image of a hanged man, instead relying on keeping score as to the number of attempts it took each player to fill in the blanks.

A version which incorporated hanging imagery was described in a 1902 article in The Philadelphia Inquirer, which stated that it was popular at "White Cap" parties where guests would wear "white peaked caps with masks".[2]

Edit 2:

Don't read this, you will rage.

as soon as I read 'white cap', grrrr. So important to know history and origins, so that we don't repeat horrendous mistakes.

Yeah seriously, my mom thought us to play hangman. But my kid is going to learn the birds and fish version for sure.
