It's because you have to follow it up with a loud dad chuckle and wait for the groans. It helps if you have a beer belly that jiggles when you laugh.
Also do an exaggerated wink, followed by wiggling both your eyebrows furiously.
If that doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll have to say "Geddit? POWER couple!" in the most obnoxiously jovial tone you can muster.
