So the orange toddler is pissed at Canada because Trudeau laughed at him a few times?

Jfc. What a time to be alive.

Trump caught Melania flicking her bean while moaning Justin's name. Fact.

[–] IhaveCrabs111@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Trump couldn’t care less. She’s there for the money and trump needs to pretend to be married for clout

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 6 points 1 month ago

Yes laughed..

I mean, all of this happened because Obama made fun of him at the Whitehouse correspondents dinner.

Glad to know my career and income is at risk because of some poor presidents feelings.

Edited: someone else commented same thing below this.

The man’s the head of state, of supposedly the biggest economy in the world, closer to the nuclear codes than most of us, and behaves like a complete cock. It’s legitimately terrifying and I’m not even USian.

Ah. Thanks, been wondering some time about that and googling gave a lot of mixed results for me.

Being "nice" is not a policy for the UK to follow. It might be lucky to avoid some of the tariffs targetting the EU but when he wants something from the UK he will use the tariff threat.

The UK is far better off trying to improve relations with the EU and liberalise trade as much as can be achieved without reigniting the brexit debate. That might not be much.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Have you informed the UK about this?

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 31 points 1 month ago

Given that Keir Starmer is currently in Brussels to strengthen the UK-EU bond, I think the UK is aware of this.

So a trade deficit equals a subsidy in trump's brain.

The US has a trade deficit with most of the world. If he goes 0% -> 25% on all imports it'll be about $1T in funds moved from private hands into government coffers. (Of course, not all countries have 0% import tariffs today).

Would this be the biggest tax raise in American history?

Would this be the biggest tax raise in American history?

Maybe, and it hits the poor worse than most forms of tax increases.
So it's blatantly in favor of the 1%, accumulating power even more in the top.

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 7 points 1 month ago

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call it a "brain".

And of course Donald Trump is as immovable as granite and unwaveringly loyal to his friends & allies.

There is no chance of him having a spat with the Aberdeenshire council about rubbish collection for his golf club and responding with a 50% tariff...

Or for that matter of being directed to do it by his owners with even less justification....

As much as I hate Starmer, he and Zelensky have done a good job of keeping their interests vis à cis Trump.

[–] guy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The UK and US have pretty balanced trading, both reprting surpluses. Isn't that the real reason? Tariffs would be really stupid here

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Stupid is the real reason.

Surround yourself with Yes-men, piss off your allies, cuddle with dictators. Great strategy.

Maybe MAGA actually stands for Make America Gone Again. Is that acceptable English? Not a native speaker.
