I never formally learned Spanish, but yesterday I found out that I absorbed enough of it through music and tv shows and spending childhood holidays in Spain that I could hold a surprisingly ok conversation with very understanding native speakers ๐Ÿ˜…

It's the best feeling and very rewarding to be actually able to use the language in a conversation for the first time, isn't it?

It's incredible!

That's very cool. I actually had the same thing with english; my native language is arabic but since i watched mostly english content i'd say i'm fluent & native (technically). However it's mostly a written and read language, i don't speak it much, which can cause me to trip over my words lol.

Haha same, although I formally learned English for years, a few decades of constant exposure made me more fluent than the educational system could ever can.

For Spanish however, I'm still riding the high. I can read it somewhat, as it's related to my native French. But I never knew I could hold more interesting conversations than ordering food or asking for directions ๐Ÿ˜…

Decided to roll-in to another course of German! Honestly nothing beats a good course if you are lazy like me, and I'm hoping to meet new people too. Ich brauche mehr Freunde.

Interesting! I've been reading LLPSI, the vulgate, and Latin Wikipedia to practice. If only we had flairs hah.

Its really cool being able to see old historic texts and it hits you that you can understand them, even if vaguely.

German is a language I'd eventually want to learn :)

I wish you luck on your journey! Latin is such a cool language. And yeah flairs would be useful, maybe we'll get them as lemmy develops!

It does sound cool, especially since you can see Latin engraved on walls and monuments in Europe. You can imagine being set in that time even! I don't know if this is of any interest but I'll shoot anyway: Finnish national broadcasting company used to summarize national / international news of the week in Latin for 30 years until 2019. They still host those weekly podcast episodes online in case you are interested: https://areena.yle.fi/podcastit/1-1931339

Here is the page for short dictionary list for each episode with the most relevant words: https://yle.fi/a/20-152550

I hope I got that right and hope someone if not you finds this interesting :) Also I can highly recommend German, such a fun language to learn!

I've heard of nuntii latini! I think german is cool, mainly because of the word combination aspect of it, i've always been interested in those types of languages.
