The threat of tariffs is a cheap alternative to actual tariffs in terms of scaring businesses. So don't believe him, or at least trust our government to hit back hard.

Note that he doesn't have the authority to do what he says. His whole tariff scheme right now is framed as national security, but this escalation shit is not going to be forever covered under that excuse. It's the US Congress that has the authority over tariffs and at some point (maybe after the next midterms) this point will be made in the us system.

That is, unless they completely break their democracy first. Goddamn yanks man.

Trump says a lot of things, because he's a piece of shit gasbag ass-walrus who should go fuck himself

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 hours ago

What tariffs? This pathetic sack of shit keeps changing his mind about whether or not he's even imposing any.

So will OUR taffifs on electricity, potash, and of course oil.

The citizens of America will pay crazy amounts for power, gas, and most of the fertilizer you grow crops with!

Oh ya! No migrant labour in the fields either - shit even Canada relies on them to harvest our food.

America, you want to treat your closest friend and ally this way?

Either put your orange dog down, or fuck off!

I think he might seriously unleash the biggest man made famine of history, and it's the Americans who will be starving. At some point, it is going to be so expensive to grow crops in the US that farmers will have no choice but to let their crop die in their fields.

Add in that their poultry industry is struggling and borderline decimated by bird flu.

Even Stalin would have been impressed.

I dunno about the biggest famine in history—it would take a lot of people dying to match the higher death toll estimates for the Great Chinese Famine of 1959-1961. I could see things getting pretty messed up, though: sharp rises in food prices because of lowered yields, the need for imports going up, profiteering on the international market, lower-income people being unable to buy enough calories to survive. Unfortunately, it's likely that the urban poor, rather than the rural white people who are the core of the Republican voting base, would be the ones disproportionaly affected.

But if I remember correctly, the great Chinese famine was caused by one idiot on top and loads of people not having the balls to say no to him.

So you see, it was a totally different situation from now.

And we ALL could have moved forward together. We’ve cooperated for 100 years on disasters, wars, disease, crime, science, trade, climate, oil, etc. You name it.

Ho, wait…. america says it doesn’t need friends anymore - unless they are Russian.

Ok.

Have fun!

And USAID won’t be there to subsidize their farmers… it’s like they are getting double ass fucked over there

[–] RamblingPanda@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 1 day ago

At this point you have to suspect all those GOP electing rednecks like to get railed in the bum-bum. He fucked them over in his first time. What did they expect to happen in his second one?

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

He'll need the balls to actually follow through first. Musk won't do it for him.

As long as Krasnov Trump is in power, Tariff and sanctions on US by other countries will keep rising as time goes by. This automatic rise of tariffs should be put into law.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 12 points 1 day ago

They may also go down over time. They may do little spirals, or go sideways.

Donald changes his mind on these things literally hour-to-hour. That's really great for American businesses.

Cuba’s doing fine, Canada would do even better given our natural resources and allies.

[–] gramie@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 hours ago

Cuba is doing fine? It wasn't long ago that I read in the news about the entire Island going dark because of a lack of fuel for generators.

They may have some positive areas, but they are suffering in many ways.

[–] puppinstuff@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago

If we have the social programs to catch those whom tariffs and eventual embargoes affect then the reward is a country full of better quality goods.
