Use gun. And if that don't solve it, use more gun.

Waaaagh is reserved for when the dakka is not enough

[–] chaogomu@ttrpg.network 2 points 1 month ago

I have heard tale of a legendary battle where there was enough dakka, but I don't believe it.

It's also super relevant to the shattered sea trilogy. Guns were legit "elf" magic

Think about how quickly the entire WWWIII (Wizarding-World War III) would have ended if all of the good guys had simply armed up with good ol’ American hot lead. Basilisk? Let’s see how tough it is when you shoot it with a .470 Nitro Express. Worried about its Medusa-gaze? Wear night vision goggles. The image is light-amplified and re-transmitted to your eyes. You aren’t looking at it—you’re looking at a picture of it. Imagine how epic the first movie would be if Harry had put a breeching charge on the bathroom wall, flash-banged the hole, and then went in wearing NVGs and a Kevlar-weave stab-vest, carrying a SPAS-12. And have you noticed that only Europe seems to a problem with Deatheaters? Maybe it’s because Americans have spent the last 200 years shooting deer, playing GTA: Vice City, and keeping an eye out for black helicopters over their compounds. Meanwhile, Brits have been cutting their steaks with spoons.

Remember: gun-control means that Voldemort wins. God made wizards and God made muggles, but Samuel Colt made them equal. Now I know what you’re going to say: “But a wizard could just disarm someone with a gun!” Yeah, well they can also disarm someone with a wand (as they do many times throughout the books/movies). But which is faster: saying a spell or pulling a trigger?

Avada Kedavra, meet Avtomat Kalashnikova. Imagine Harry out in the woods, wearing his invisibility cloak, carrying a .50bmg Barrett, turning Deatheaters into pink mist, scratching a lightning bolt into his rifle stock for each kill. I don’t think Madam Pomfrey has any spells that can scrape your brains off of the trees and put you back together after something like that. Voldemort’s wand may be 13.5 inches with a Phoenix-feather core, but Harry’s would be 0.50 inches with a tungsten core. Let’s see Voldy wave his at 3,000 feet per second. Better hope you have some Essence of Dittany for that sucking chest wound. I can see it now...Voldemort roaring with evil laughter and boasting to Harry that he can’t be killed, since he is protected by seven Horcruxes, only to have Harry give a crooked grin, flick his cigarette butt away, and deliver what would easily be the best one-liner in the entire series: “Well then I guess it’s a good thing my 1911 holds 7+1.” And that is why Harry Potter should have carried a 1911.

LORE OF METAL

[–] Serious_Me@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Title made me think this was gonna be some stage magician going "Want to see an American magic trick? I'll make you disappear!" Then it cuts to the other person getting deported.

Smokeless powder (at least, the first actually useful one) is french tho

I'm out of spells, but I'm not out of shells.

Outlaw Star used guns with magic bullets.

Cast iron joke was funnier

[–] RustyShackleford@programming.dev -4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How does one block entire lemmy instances? I want to block hexbear, lemmygrad, and lemmy.ml, but I'm not seeing where I can do that on the UI? I'm on programming.dev.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (4 children)

Me, who chose a big default instance before knowing anything about Lemmy: guess I will be a civilian casualty

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Making a new account elsewhere costs nothing.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It costs all my account history, not knowing people responded to my old comments, losing or having to migrate all my saved posts/comments, etc.

When I first joined there was talk of Lemmy supporting account migration between instances do I was waiting for that, but that has petered out I think.

[–] papertowels@mander.xyz 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

As someone who has changed accounts you don't really lose that much. Karmas not a concept here, so that's the big one.

Besides that, most apps let you log into multiple accounts so you can still check all of the legacy interactions if you need to.

The main pain was subscribing to all the communities again.

EDIT: when I first made accounts, .ml was recommended, and I tried signing up cuz I thought, "I work with machine learning, sure!"

Oh, those were brighter days.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 3 points 1 month ago

There are scripts now that can move your subscription list

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's only been a year. You'll be fine.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Yeah, I genuinely don't know what's a good instance to move to though. Even yours is controversial for being too big.

[–] 0ops@lemm.ee 2 points 1 month ago

I like lemm.ee, though it's also getting kinda large

[–] Klear@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

I actually prefer sh.itjust.works, but got used to using Alexandrite, so I'm alternating.

I have a backup account on lemm.ee, though I don't use that unless I want to make a split personality joke.

[–] psud@aussie.zone 1 points 1 month ago

lemme.ee and lemmy.sdf.org seem good to me

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

Fuck me, right?

[–] DontMakeMoreBabies@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

Change? Not difficult.

[–] RustyShackleford@programming.dev -1 points 1 month ago (2 children)

"Civilian casualty"?

I'm sorry, but I don't understand your reference and/or sarcasm.

Based on your reply, should the takeaway be that there is no way to block entire instances?

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There is no reference, I'm just saying it sucks I get blocked due to people blocking lemmy.ml, even though I have nothing to do with any political stuff there.

[–] RustyShackleford@programming.dev 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Got it.

Sorry, just trying to curate my feed; nothing against you specifically.

[–] easily3667@lemmus.org 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I believe he's saying that he alone is standing against your tank

Only possible interpretation

Okay, I think I get the comment now; thanks.
