Community rules (click to expand)

1. Follow the site-wide rules

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry will not be tolerated.
  • 3. Post Linux-related content
  • Including Unix and BSD.
  • Non-Linux content is acceptable as long as it makes a reference to Linux. For example, the poorly made mockery of sudo in Windows.
  • No porn, no politics, no trolling or ragebaiting.
  • 4. No recent reposts
  • Everybody uses Arch btw, can't quit Vim, <loves/tolerates/hates> systemd, and wants to interject for a moment. You can stop now.

  • The substance of a post should be comprehensible for people who only speak English.
  • Titles and post bodies written in other languages will be allowed, but only as long as the above rule is observed.
  • 6. (NEW!) Regarding public figuresWe all have our opinions, and certain public figures can be divisive. Keep in mind that this is a community for memes and light-hearted fun, not for airing grievances or leveling accusations.

Important: never execute code or follow advice that you don't understand or can't verify, especially here. The word of the day is credibility. This is a meme community -- even the most helpful comments might just be shitposts that can damage your system. Be aware, be smart, don't remove France.

I've reached the acceptance stage of possibly being a pariah in the community for not wanting to wear the socks.

I'm also a cis-gendered heterosexual married male, so I guess that tracks.

    [–] janus2@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

ok but have you tried the long socks? they're comfortable. also you can get manly hockey player style ones

    [–] NeilBru@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I used to play ice hockey as a preteen/teen, so I've worn 'em in that context.

As far as the fem-boy/"girly" ones, I'm just not into it. Any socks above mid-achilles tendon make me itch. I have hairy legs.

    [–] janus2@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

what about striped ankle socks πŸ˜‚

    [–] NeilBru@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well! My wife is Dutch and she bought me a pair of Dutch HappySocksβ„’ with stripes a few birthdays ago.

I suppose I'm not that much of a pariah after all!

    [–] janus2@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

those are awesome and they definitely count as programming socks 11/10

    [–] DerisionConsulting@lemmy.ca 225 points 2 days ago (3 children)

That might be the same person, just at work vs at home.

Or years apart after a life changing realization

The Linux to Transfem pipeline is real!

    [–] Ziglin@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

Hmmm that can't be right, did I use the wrong terminal? Why can I only sometimes be a girl?

    Or it's their child

    [–] evidences@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

It must feel so good to get home, take of your slacks, and let your programming socks out after a long day in the computer mines.

    Wake up, Neo

    [–] Lvdwsn@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My company just went under and let us keep our laptops, day after they wiped it I got Ubuntu on it. So I'm a little bit of column A, little bit of column B!

    [–] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have more in common with the guy on the left but I love and support the people on the right

    [–] Damage@feddit.it 12 points 1 day ago

They support you too... And the whole internet infrastructure!

I read people on the tight 🀭

    [–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago

    All about that bussy

    [–] Someonelol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 2 days ago (4 children)

I've worked with a bunch of hardcore Linux users in my career, some of whom even knew about Lemmy. Not one of them have ever worn striped socks though.

A lot of transfems boymode in a professional setting :c

    (Myself included)

    [–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 33 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The number of trans people is very small. Only a small percentage of people who work in tech are trans. But a relatively huge percentage of trans people work in tech.

    [–] monogram@feddit.nl 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nor is every thigh high sock user trans.

    [–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 2 points 1 day ago

I respect cis people's right to wear whatever they want...but if I see striped thigh high socks, I will continue to make assumptions until told otherwise.

I don't work in tech but literally just put stickers and opensuse on a refurbished Thinkpad I bought a few days ago 🫑

    [–] Petter1@lemm.ee 32 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I guess the important thing is Arch 🀭🫠

Ugh. I hope the current owner has new keycaps for all the sock colors because matching socks + keyboard is cool, but well… when you change your socks that goes out the window

    [–] thejml@lemm.ee 42 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Judging by that picture, I think they’re all in on that color scheme and likely just bought multiple pairs of the same socks.

    [–] hddsx@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 days ago

    That’s baller

    [–] boonhet@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

Look, I have a suggestion that will change your life. You can never live another way again.

Go buy 10-20 pairs of socks, all same. When you get a hole in one sock, you only throw away the one sock. You never have to worry about mixing and matching. If you've got two socks, they count as a pair.

I'm not even matching my keycaps to socks, nor wearing anything special, I just found a specific pair of socks I liked and I've bought heaps over the years.

    [–] Bryllyg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 23 points 2 days ago

Redundant socks is essential for this setup.

    [–] LostXOR@fedia.io 22 points 2 days ago
