Oligarchy has existed in the US since its inception. Fascist oligarchy is what has arrived.

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 13 points 14 hours ago

"Has arrived"?!? Motherfucker what have you been watching for 100+ years?

[–] Rooskie91@discuss.online 63 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Oooooo so we're just going to act like millennials were mad for no reason all these years?

Were the oligarchs not a concern during occupy Wall Street? Or did everyone just fall for the propaganda?

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

I'm personally a fan of all the people who called us (and continue to call us) alarmists and who dismiss everything as overreacting

[–] EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml 75 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

Arrived?

It's been here for decades, the only difference is it now works in the forefront instead of behind the scenes.

[–] toy_boat_toy_boat@lemmy.world 16 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

really though, who could have possibly seen this inevitability?

[–] ClassStruggle@lemmy.ml 15 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Anyone paying attention. Leftists have been screaming about it for decades.

[–] toy_boat_toy_boat@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

I'm old enough to remember Alex fucking Jones screaming about it.. the "police state", or whatever it was that he named a good five or six videos about.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 7 points 20 hours ago

Literally anyone paying attention?

[–] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 10 points 20 hours ago

Been there since the start, even before the 1920s/30s "Business Plot" there were Robber Barrons, Plantation Owners and Slavery.

[–] LeninOnAPrayer@lemm.ee 3 points 18 hours ago

I'd say it's been oligarchy to a degree since the inception of the US. The state has always served the interest of the rich capital owners.

I think people are using "Oligarchy" to describe fascism.

Fascism is simply capitalism in decline looking for a scapegoat for its failures and contradictions.

[–] belastend@slrpnk.net 3 points 11 hours ago

Nah, you couldn't even be bothered to vote against fascism.

[–] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 22 points 21 hours ago

Somehow, Oligarchy has arrived in America

They're the same picture...

[–] metallic_substance@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

Yes. But it's a VERY big problem when we give them a different name. The typical American doesn't really know what an oligarchy is. Many more are familiar with the concept of fascism. It obscures the issue. Call a spade a spade.

[–] Kookie215@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

I feel like if we were serious about "doing something" then we would have before this point. Now the vast majority of people are just pretending nothing is happening and we'll have a free and fair election in 3.5 years and all the prices will magically go down for the first time in history, and all our rights will be restored.

[–] Vraylle@fedia.io 1 points 14 hours ago

No, so long as the bread and circuses continue to flow.

[–] Delta_V@lemmy.world 3 points 19 hours ago

USA was made by oligarchs, for oligarchs. That's the entire purpose of a Republic.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 1 points 18 hours ago

Nah.

Also, it was already here.

[–] softcat@lemmy.ca 1 points 20 hours ago

Tap for spoilerNo

In before the doomers talk about how Americans are being soft and not doing anything about the problem.

In before the doomers talk about how we're in so deep that this is the end of mankind as we know it.

Yes. We will confront it. Sometime between now and when it's ego-fuel runs dry or fuels enough in-fighting to fracture their system to make that fight winnable.

Lemmy comment sections have been getting toxic AF lately.
