2024 discussion threads
They had no way to track that when they sent out copies of the films now it is a streaming site.

Before the streaming site it would be impossible to track
They could ask for the movie tickets as a proof.
A lot of Oscar nominated films don't get theatrical releases to enough theaters for to make that possible. Screener copies have historically been sent as DVDs with individually coded embedded tracking metadata.
Or make them take a quiz!
As a fan of the international features category, I really hope this helps some of the less-widely-distributed films get wider release.
