Hi everyone,

as you may have noticed, I currently do not have time to spend on the server as is necessary for a lemmy instance (moderation, the occasional post, updating lemmy software). So, I decided that it would be better to close the server and instead spend the money on the infrastructure of Lemmy itself. This means you have 2 months to find a new community for H.P., which shouldn't be a problem and has already happened in parts (see https://diagonlemmy.social/post/104129).

Thanks for all the support and the many posts, it was really fun creating this place on the Fediverse with you guys!

PS: The community decided to move to https://literature.cafe/c/harrypotter :)

I'm surprised literature.cafe is still going, the admin had indicated they were going to abandon it. It looks like Arthur stepped in for Gabe?

Disappointing to hear, but understandable, and not unexpected.

Thank you @blueberry@diagonlemmy.social, for creating and hosting this server over the past year. I have very much enjoyed my time here.

Thank you for giving us two months notice. I have great respect for your transparency and humility.

When the server closes, the communities will stay visible on other servers, but any new content posted to them won't federate to other servers. As a result, they will live on in a sort of "undead" state. (Example: https://sh.itjust.works/c/bertstrips@feddit.de (feddit.de shut down about a year ago))

To address this, I would recommend the following actions:

Set each community to "only moderators can post"
Include a link to whichever community we decide to move to in a pinned thread and the sidebar of each community.
Prepend the string "[Retired]" or "[Closed]" to the display name of each community.

This would inform anyone who comes across the communities afterwards what the situation is and prevent them from inadvertently posting to a "dead community".

What are your thoughts on this? I would be willing to help if you are too busy.

If you have time, you might want to change the format of the links in the sidebar to "instance agnostic" (e.g. !harrypotter@literature.cafe instead of https://literature.cafe/c/harrypotter), but it's not critical.

For the display names, you may want to prepend "[Closed]" instead of appending it. This way, for interfaces where the name may be truncated due to length, it will still be obvious that the community is closed. Additionally, community names starting with "[" will appear in a separate section of an alphabetized list, setting them apart from the rest of the communities. Again, not critical.
