If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

There's a bit of Weird Alice in all of us. Come see how we help birds through their rough days and back into the wild at our FeatherFest event on June 1 from 11am- 3pm. Register at www.theraptortrust.org/featherfest

If you ever get to the Newark, NJ area, give Alice and the gang a visit! This place is one of the first places to get me into owls. It's a nice place to visit, the staff is great, and they've got a nice little shop.

It's Weird Alice Wednesday, and Alice is looking fresh to death in her summer molt! We think the food on her beak is a nice touch 😎

We interrupt your daily feed to bring you Weird Alice. Is she just being weird, or is she suffering from irritable owl syndrome? We can never tell.

Weird Alice, one of our resident Eastern Screech Owls, is having a rough molting season! Birds molt out their feathers for different reasons, but often so they can regrow new, undamaged feathers for winter or migration. Alice molted a lot of feathers at once in preparation for her upcoming role as the Lorax.
