New to this, starting to understand how it works sort of. I am looking for a place to chat to people, are live text chat room communities a thing here? Or do people chat through comments on posts? Not quite understanding that aspect yet.

You can message people

The "how" depends on your client

Mostly we just shitpost at each other, but every once in a while we’ve been known to have intelligent conversation.

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 16 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Haha, I’ve seen this word a lot, please define shitpost for me, it is pretty self explanatory but is there an official meaning for it?

That actually makes sense. Haha

[–] BootLoop@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 days ago

It's posting dumb and usually low effort memes or jokes that aren't meant to be taken too seriously.

I'm just here to post my fucked-up "performance art" and have a laugh

every once in a while we’ve been known to have intelligent conversation.

Maybe two years ago, not anymore

No live chat, there is Matrix for that. There is !casualconversation@lemmy.world if you want to chat with people via comments.

[–] Blaze@piefed.social 2 points 1 day ago

!casualconversation@lemm.ee

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 11 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ok I see, so what we are doing now is basically what Lemmy is about. Someone makes a post about a subject and people comment on the main post or reply to someone else’s comment on the main post. Is that about it or is there more to it?

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That's about it. That is the core of digg and Reddit Lemmy is doing.

I found no value is live threads, Reddit live, or Reddit chat so I am happy this aren't here.

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 10 points 3 days ago

Got it, thank you for the answer

It's kinda like discord. But you can run it on your own hardware. Self hosted as we call it. https://matrix.org/

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ok, I’m not that technical but I’ll do some reading.

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You don’t have to run it yourself, you can just create an account on an existing server of your choosing, just like Lemmy.

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Aha! This is useful information I appreciate it

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Critically, you can make your account on ANY one matrix server and then you will be able to talk on all of them.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I find it analogous to IRC - Many servers connected together with shared users and chat rooms.

I use the Element app on android, and https://app.element.io/ on PC

[–] leraje@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

Gonna be that guy and mention an alternative - Schildi Chat available for web, desktop and Android. Its based on the Element apps but with some extras. For example if you use the 'Next' variant of the Android app, Spaces work as intended.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

That reminds me that I was going to set up an "official" CasualConversations matrix chat, but then completely forgot.

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 5 points 3 days ago

Thanks I will check these out

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 14 points 3 days ago (2 children)

speaking of..... anyone hear from Nicole recently?

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

She left us and took the kids.

[–] Sandbar_Trekker@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

Last I heard from her was back around the beginning of April.

[–] FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 6 points 3 days ago

There's conversations in posts and sometimes messages, but if you're looking for live federated chat, you might want to check out Matrix over something like Lemmy or Mbin, which are more forum-like.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

You want Matrix if you want fediverse live chat.

A "live" conversation can happen here (or any forum, really), but it's not super common.

[–] nsrxn@scribe.disroot.org 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I just use IRC.

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How do you use it? I’m not too tech savvy

[–] nsrxn@scribe.disroot.org 3 points 3 days ago (2 children)
[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

The next trick is finding public groups, is there a search function of sorts ?

[–] nsrxn@scribe.disroot.org 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

yea. I don't use fluffy chat, I just use element, but it's definitely searchable. there's also a directory.... let me dig it up

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have everything setup and successfully greeted like 1 person who I think was a mod trying to sus me out. But are there any groups or chats that are not just developers talking about a specific app or code ? How do I find such? Feel free to ignore this as I do realise you’re not matrix Helpdesk 😂

[–] nsrxn@scribe.disroot.org 1 points 1 day ago

didn't you try the directory I linked?

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago

I think I did it… fluffy chat? Lol

[–] Jerb322@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Kinda got your wish with one post....

Just ask a question every once and a while..

[–] Mr_Stellar@lemm.ee 3 points 3 days ago

Very true, this has answered a lot of questions
