This is the first I'm hearing of the CoMaps fork of Organic Maps so here's the FAQs for others wondering, like me

[–] zdhzm2pgp@lemmy.ml 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

For those of you having trouble getting this on F-Droid, @mp3@piefed.ca says: "Go to Settings > Include Anti-Features and enable Tethered Network Services for it to show up."

Can you use this "co-maps" with a selfhosted osmand instance and not require any network tethered service?

[–] Stomata@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Or just use droid-ify

Currently using OSMAnd... Working great for me but always open to something that offers a benefit I don't currently have...

How does CoMaps differ from above?

OSMAnd works with Android Auto to display on my in-car screen... Does CoMaps??

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 22 points 2 days ago

I think it's a brand new organic maps fork

[–] Creat@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 2 days ago

If you're happy with osmand there's no point to switching IMHO. It's a much more simplified interface, so customization especially compared to the enormous options in osmand are relatively limited.

That being said it does work just as well, judging from the little use I've had.

Osmand doesn't seem to be able to pull up addresses. It's pretty useless without that function. Why I switched to Organic.

Pretty sad that that's necessary. I'm good with CoMaps, thanks.

It would be nice if they implemented some sort of backup to self-hosted nextcloud.

I've lost a lot of bookmarks due to corruption or bookmarks being duplicated on organic and it's predecessors. I bookmark all sort of things in my travels. So, a better backup system would be a deciding factor for me, at least.

What's better about it compared to Organic Maps? I clicked on some of the links, but it didn't say.

[–] emrsmsrli@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

better search, FOR SURE. search actually shows stuff in my area and not some random place in the middle of nowhere on the first items

[–] Liquira@hispagatos.space 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

@TheLeadenSea @zdhzm2pgp it seems to be more community managed, more transparency.

truth be told, the former branding was much better. It's unfortunate that they needed to resort to have a fork

[–] JoKi@feddit.org 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Branding is still an ongoing project. They are just deciding about the logo. So there will be changes.

[–] ReversalHatchery@beehaw.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's more about the name for me

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think that was also a vote. Honestly organic maps is kinda stupid too.

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

I always have Google if it's natural maps

[–] iturnedintoanewt@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

For a first release, it already comes with a bunch of changes. How many people moved to the fork, is it all of the devs there now?

[–] tired_n_bored@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I appreciate CoMaps but for now they don't differ in functionalities at all. Will consider switching in case Organic really enshittifies

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

Yeah, like if they did something crazy, like sponsored Kayak links

[–] Screen_Shatter@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (3 children)

When I click this link Fdroid says "no such app found", and it doesnt appear when I search. What gives?

[–] Matt@lemdro.id 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I had to enable the Tethered Network Services anti-feature in F-Droid for CoMaps to show up.

[–] ozymandias117@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Any idea why that's needed when Organic Maps doesn't?

My understanding is this is an early fork?

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's on there too.

I'm guessing, but this anti-feature was added about a year ago, maybe you already had the app?

[–] ozymandias117@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Ah. That makes sense, then. Thanks!

[–] Stomata@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Fdroid official app is still outdae to me. Repo doesn't automatically update itself and so on. I shifted to Droid-ify. Try that

[–] perry@lemy.lol 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

assuming you tried to update the repos, your repo mirror might be outdated

[–] rozlav@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago

Can't seeinf it on fdroid 1.22.0, web link seems working though
