Real tweet, fake text... no way any NATO leader would say "Europe is going to pay BIG" it's just too Trump. Same with the incessant comma splices.

But big congrats to Trump for ruining the information space so completely that I genuinely cannot tell what's real anymore.

[–] SGforce@lemmy.ca 48 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I'm sure EVERY European politician randomly CAPITALISES words like some LUNATIC

[–] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 week ago

And signs their essay texts with their name. Very common as we all know.

Hasn't Rutte always been known for being able to handle Trump well? I'm pretty sure the only way to do that is kiss his ass in a way he understands, so this doesn't seem too surprising.

[–] BA834024112@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

AP is reporting this as real

[–] assaultpotato@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

I would love and hate to see proof that Mark Rutte really texted this to Trump.

The "Truth" post is 100% real, inarguably, but I haven't seen anyone reporting the picture is of a real message from Rutte to Trump.

E: never mind that is... apparently Rutte's office has confirmed the message is really from Rutte????

?????

I need to go lie down.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 week ago

I'm confused why people are surprised at this, to be honest. It's entirely expected.

It's entirely expected, not sure why you're in disbelief.

[–] SippyCup@feddit.nl 28 points 1 week ago (5 children)

It reads like something Trump wrote about himself. He's done that kind of bullshit before.

[–] amorpheus@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Or something written to pander to him.

The Rutte team has confirmed it was indeed a real text sent by Mark Rutte to Trump.

[–] adb@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 week ago (12 children)

Ran a quick search and multiple well established news outlets are reporting this.

I’m afraid it is.

The wording does seem very out of character for Rutte but it makes sense that he feels the need to stoop to Trump’s level and overdo the flattering.

World leaders have figured out he's functionally a toddler. Starmer and Trudeau took the same approach.

[–] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 48 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This is so poorly written I have no idea if it's sarcasm or not.

[–] Darkenfolk@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 week ago

Eh, looks like rutte writes English in the same way that he speaks it. Honestly I first thought that it was a shitpost, but no, it seems legit.

[–] bigboismith@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

It's written in a way for Trump to understand

[–] djsoren19@lemmy.blahaj.zone 35 points 1 week ago (6 children)

obviously, I doubt Rutte was expecting this message to be shared. If he wasn't a complete moron and actually doing this just to stroke his own ego, I'd actually give Donald props for leaking it, as Rutte kissing Donald's ass makes him look terrible, and more broadly makes the European parts of NATO look terrible.

I imagine Rutte's intent is to stroke Trump's ego to try and keep him interested in NATO, but I feel like that's a fool's errand. Trump doesn't give a shit about anyone else but himself. This new agreement, with NATO signatories needing to commit 5% of their GDP, feels like a grift for the benefit of U.S. defense contractors. The U.S. cannot be trusted to actually honor their agreements anymore, so why pay more into their alliance? Is Europe really that scared of further Russian aggression?

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 28 points 1 week ago

Europeans online think that Rutte is 'masterfully manipulating' Trump by talking to him like a 5 year old and are extremely proud of this.

[–] Kickforce@lemmy.wtf 12 points 1 week ago (12 children)

Well Rutte's job is basically to keep NATO together, can't blame him for trying. Personally I would not be sad if NATO chucked the US and told them to pack their bases all around Europe and go home. But I understand Rutte's position.

Anyone else remember when libs were fearmongering that Trump will leave NATO and leftists said "don't threaten me with a good time"?

[–] folaht@lemmy.ml 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Liberals are right-wing. Always have been, always will be.

Dutch liberals are not under the progressive umbrella,
so while the Dutch progressive party is advocating to stop the war,
Dutch liberals are in full support of it.

Communication is most effective in the language of receiver. Rutte emulates Trump like ChatGPT.

[–] geneva_convenience@lemmy.ml 31 points 1 week ago

By the way Rutte changed the wording in the agreement to be more vague as to what 'allies' means because Spain refused to agree to 5%.

[–] Tenderizer78@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Does Trump not realize that this message makes himself look bad?

[–] martin4598@lemm.ee 23 points 1 week ago (3 children)

No. The message here is "look at how I´m having my dick sucked"

Well ... it's good to see there aren't just idiots in the US

[–] olafurp@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Trump is getting played because of his fragile ego. Him sharing a message of a person stroking his ego is evidence of it working.

Well i just found out some of these NATO leaders were Nazis so NATO might just be a white supremacist group technically.

[–] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 week ago (2 children)

NATO is just a millitary alliance for the purpose of maintaining Western Imperialism, which is headed by the US Empire.

I’ve have said this before but WW3 will start because of a meme or ChatGPT.

“How are you traveling to His Majesty’s dinner? Mind if I get a ride swingin from your nuts?”

[–] match@pawb.social 14 points 1 week ago

Oh my God I can just text the president while pretending to be anyone and shape world politics

[–] CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 1 week ago

My sense at this point is that grotesque flattery works on Trump, but only to a point. Trump doesn't really like anyone, the best you can do is a slightly-better-than-neutral relationship. (And at the other end he's willing to coexist with anyone who hasn't personally slighted him, like Kim Jong Un)
