I was today years old when I learned they aren't jellyfish... Well, guess I am one of the lucky 10k

To anyone else that only now learned that: they are actually quite interesting, and colonial organisms of a group called Siphonophorae.

I’m 99% sure that’s a picture of a blue bottle, not sure what a man o war is.

Edit: Well today I learned that what we call “bluebottles” in Aotearoa and Australia is called “Man of War” in the US.

Bluebottles are a kind of housefly in the US or UK aren't they?

What a hilarious name to give it. Granted 'Man-o-war' is also very funny for a thing that mostly just floats around and stings you if you swim into it.

Named after a ship class that would make you scared if you saw it on the horizon

Shouldn't it be "we are attractive, yes".

What is the original dialogue?

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's from The Good Place. She isn't a person, and she isn't a computer either.

"And to Janet! The best robot,"

"Not a robot."

"Girl,"

"Not a girl."

"And straight up hottie!"

"I am attractive, yes."

They hurt like a bitch too. Swam across one while snorkeling in Florida a few months ago. Had a couple tentacles wrapped around my arm. Not fun. And flared up again 2 weeks later. Also not fun.

What are ya doin in my waters
