I'm at a point where I don't remember where I put things, I just know myself well enough to guess where I would put them

I've lived long enough to know that I need to have a system of: a place for everything and everything in its place.

..... Now if I could only implement that, that'd be great...

My pie chart of blame looks more like 90%/10%. Where if I simply set something down, even with the need to use it immediately, I lose it.

I rely heavily on my Wife to find things for me. Without her, I would lose my head.

I missed two days of senior beach week because I was so afraid of losing my keys I put them in my shoe where I couldn't possibly have forgotten them.

It's amazing how long you can search for a ser of keys without ever needing to put your shoes on.

Because I have ADHD, I have to designate special places for everything to keep them from disappearing.

They still disappear anyway. I don't fucking get why.

Drives me crazy.

My hypothesis is that they hide. So I saturate all the hiding places so they have nowhere left to hide.

When I buy something known for liking to hide, I buy N of them and place them all in a designated "I've got N of these things" place (P). Then I put 1 in its home. When it hides, I get its replacement. When that hides, same again. When there are none left in P, I buy N more. Eventually they have nowhere left to hide and finding one is easy. Consequently, they stop hiding.

I had this issue for a while but about a decade ago I stumbled upon someone who said "every thing should have it's own home, and you put that thing where it lives" and it becomes somehow a lot easier.

Living with other people throws a spanner in the works but at least the thing is there much more often.

My closet is a cheap apartment the way I cram everything in there when out of space.

There should be a small sliver saying "in my hand (I'm not aware of that)"

[–] theangryseal@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

And one more for, “stuck it in the fridge I guess.”

On your face.

I regularly wear safety glasses, and regularly put them up on my forehead when finishing a task. There are regularly already a pair of glasses up there when I put the ones I’m wearing up.

Having more than one copy of a tool is bad for me, because it allows me to not find it before grabbing the backup. The plus side is that once I’ve lost all the primary copies, I have to pay attention again because I only have one copy left.

In the pantry where the cereal box goes.

Sometimes I swear I must have spacial blindness. I can check an area 7 times and not see the thing I'm looking for even though it's there.

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Are you neurodiverse? it can be a sign

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Or he needs some sleep

[–] felsiq@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

…wait what? Can you elaborate on this?

[–] LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

People can think they are "spatially blind", as they have difficulties with spatial awareness, depth perception, visual memory etc. That can be dyspraxia, it may be a sign of other conditions as well but I'm not sure.

I think I want to talk to my doctor during my next appointment o.o

[–] theangryseal@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Hmmm. I’m down on all of that. Always miserable because of it too.

...I found it. You left it in Antarctica.

[–] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 1 day ago

I got sorta (not really sorta) manic for a month and cleaned our home and rearranged everything so that it'd make more sense. I have no idea where some things are. I developed a system that I don't recall.

I can't find my dog's undercoat comb. I just used it like 3 days ago, and there's only 2 places I ever put it. It isn't in either place. 😮‍💨

[–] rayyy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

My dog runs off with things sometimes and sometime things get slid under the couch so there are many more layers of lost. Also items sometimes jump into another dimension for a period of time only to reappear somewhere else.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

My pattern is that when I finally give up looking for something and make a definite decision to replace it or make do with something else, within a couple seconds I randomly look right at whatever I was searching for. It happens so consistently I'm sure it's a brain pattern. My theory is that part of me knows where the thing is but doesn't let the information rise to my consciousness because the search is a fun game. Then when I sincerely decide to quit looking, the game is over so there's no point hiding it anymore.

[–] SonOfAntenora@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

It's in your pocket. Yes it is, just check

The worst thing when you think you did purple but it was actually green
