Sorry for the absence, it has been a bit hectic! News from the Proton Team:

Hey everyone,

It’s finally here! Split Tunneling is officially rolling out in beta for Linux, starting with Fedora and Ubuntu (latest versions only).

This is an early release, and we’ll keep on making improvements together with your help. We wanted to get it out there for anyone who wants to test-drive it and help shape how it evolves.

What’s in this release:

  • Exclude mode only — you can pick apps to bypass the VPN
  • Fedora + Ubuntu support
  • Works only with the official Proton VPN Linux app

🔜 Coming soon:

  • Include mode — route only selected apps through the VPN
  • IP-based rules
  • Debian 12 support

⚠️ A few caveats:

  • You’ll need the latest version of our Linux app
  • Feature is available only for those on a paid plan
  • The feature won’t be available for (unofficial) Flatpak versions of our app, so please use our official installer from our website.
  • Bugs and limited functionality are expected (beta life)

Let us know how it works for you, and what you’d like to see next! We are going to keep making improvements and changes to this feature over time, so give us as much feedback as you can.

Stay safe,

Proton Team

Yay, I was waiting for this! Thank you so much! This was one of the barriers stopping me from hopping to Linux! You're the best! <3 Keep up the good work!

Let me know when they figure out how to make split tunneling work with kill switch.

Is ubuntu far enough away from debian now that working in ubuntu doesn't necessarily means it works on debian?

One of the Proton Linux devs just commented about that over in the Proton VPN subreddit:

We're going to work on it, there are some issues with the DNS resolver that debian uses, which is not the same as Ubuntu and Fedora, which makes split tunneling behave in an unexpected manner.

Cool thanks

Neat!

Out of curiosity, are you or any of the other mods with Proton officially? I appreciate the updates regardless, I was curious if this was an official / unofficial community

We are the same volunteering moderators as on all the Proton subreddits. Official in that way and that the owner of the board here is the Proton account beloging to the team, unofficial in the way that the Proton Team isn't really present here.

Well thank you so much for all you do Nelizea! Hopefully someday they will give more consideration to us, but for now, we're lucky to have folks like yourself volunteering time. Very much appreciated!

You're welcome, I am here for the community 👍

Awesome! I know Split Tunneling for macOS was delayed somewhat, is there any indication on that at all?

[–] Nelizea@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Still planned for summer, which in Switzerland (HQ of Proton) is until 22nd September

Great, thank you very much! 🙂

I like to believe I'm not the only one, so I figured I'd share.

What is split tunneling:

Split tunneling is a computer networking concept which allows a user to access dissimilar security domains like a public network (e.g., the Internet) and a local area network or wide area network at the same time, using the same or different network connections.[1] This connection state is usually facilitated through the simultaneous use of a LAN network interface controller (NIC), radio NIC, Wireless LAN (WLAN) NIC, and VPN client software application without the benefit of an access control.

The ELI5 is that you can specify which traffic does and does not go through the VPN.

I typical use case for split tunneling is to access your bank. Split Tunneling will allow you to access your bank with a specific browser without shutting down your VPN for the entire computer. I usually install another browser which is only used for split tunneling and nothing else. My dad forgot to close his vpn once, they locked his account until he called the bank's service centre.

Luckily, my fellow colleague figured how to route through VPN only for given domains (Openforti for Linux), and it's been a lifesaver cuz the VPN is slow AF because all the other people (especially Win users) just use it for all networking.

My workplace learned about split tunneling when COVID hit and suddenly everyone was working from home and doing data intensive Zoom calls via the VPN, just about everything locked up.

What I'm saying is it can also by used to preserve VPN bandwidth for the applications you want/need to have using it.

I thought about split tunneling Signal since all Signal traffic is encrypted.
