I would like to get my hands on one of these. They look amazing. However, with the current state of affairs in companies right now, I'm going to wait until it comes out, and see what the complains are. If I still want it then, I'll get it, even if it costs more.

For now, the best fully functional option I've found that (sort-of) respects privacy are Garmin watches,so I'm using a Venu 3.

[–] dinckelman@lemmy.world 18 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Really love what the watch offers, but the price is quite damn steep

[–] yyprum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Is it though? Nearly 10 years ago they were going to sell them in retail for 200$, now it is 225$, and its going to be so much better. My time steel lasted for so many years... And it was wonderful, I miss it so much. After the battery started to get too weak I started the search for an alternative, there's so little offering what pebble offers. Ended up with a Garmin, which is... OK, but the price makes me nearly consider it not worth it, around two years ago it cost me 350€, and it was the cheapest version. It's probably great for super sporty people, but I just want a basic watch that helps me get notified and check a bunch of things.

In my opinion what pebble offers is incredibly good for the price, specially compared with what there is in the market currently.

There was no $70 alternative back then. There is now. Hell, my first smart watch was 30€.

I never mentioned anything about how much it was 10 years ago. I'm talking about how much it costs now. To me, there are better alternatives in the same price range

[–] mbirth@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yep, back in the days the early bird price was $169 and MSRP was supposed to be $199. And now we're looking at $225 pre-order price.

[–] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 24 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Adjusted for inflation, $199 in 2016 would be $267.85 today.

[–] sourhill@lemmy.sdf.org 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I mean, inflation is one thing. How much have wages gone up since then?

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 20 points 4 days ago

Relative to 2016-dollars, wages have gone down.

But that's not the watches' fault.

Every single pebble I had would last 6 months before screen tearing would make everything unviewable. I wonder what new issues this will have.

[–] Sagan_Wept@lemmynsfw.com 10 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Whaaaat?! I've never had that issue and have a half dozen pebbles

[–] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

What other issues did you have since you bought half a dozen of them?

[–] Sagan_Wept@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 4 days ago

I bought so many because I lived pebble, it's features and price point. When it got bought I didn't think we'd ever see another pebble, so I bought a bunch to last me hopefully the rest of my life. To the point of your question, the main issues I've faced since are battery over time and crashing. The only pebble 2 I bought failed in a year because the buttons got worn through, and water ruined it. Makes me wary of the newer upgraded pebble 2s

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

It was a well known issue and happened to more than half of all pebbles. If you simply search β€œpebble screen tear” you’ll find whole forums and websites and different solutions to try and fix it.

I’ve had 3 pebble originals, a pebble steel, and a pebble time. All had screen tearing after a few months.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

Me neither. I had 2.

[–] vhstape@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I also experienced screen tearing on every Pebble unit I owned. If they fix this, I’ll absolutely buy a new one

[–] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 11 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

They fixed the screen tearing over a decade ago, it was only present on the original and Pebble Steel because they used zebra strips for the display connection. And unless you had the very first kickstarter edition, which was glued shut and didn't have screws, the fix for the screen tear was to put a piece of paper inside the case to add just a bit of thickness, it took less than 5 minutes.

[–] PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca -2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is not true. The screen tearing issue was also there in the pebble time series. I had a pebble time with the colour display and it still teared.

[–] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 7 points 4 days ago

Time uses a normal display connector, it doesn't suffer from the pebble screen tear as it's known.
You can still damage the display, either by force or with moisture ingress, but it's not at all the same type of an issue - zebra connectors require pressure to stay connected, and over time they lose their squishiness and the connection gets unreliable.

The screen tearing was actually a hardware issue specific to the original Pebble and Steel models (with the zebra strip connectors). The Time series used different display technology that fixed this isssue completely. If the new model keeps the same display connection method as the Time, you should be good to go!

ah yes. one minute past forty-two. my favourite time of day

I think that's the date - the 42nd of January.

[–] yyprum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I love the changes they have done. I loved the pebble time steel, and personally the design of pebble time 2 was not my thing and I was devastated that pebble time 2 was dropped. This new design manages to marry the pebble time 2 and the pebble time steel incredibly well. And the color options seem really great actually... It's going to be difficult to choose.

And furthermore, it is a relief to have again the metal buttons. I'm going to have to dig out the time steel to see if I can use it to test the new version to see if I can get back to developing some watchfaces.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

Agreed on all accounts.

[–] gusgalarnyk@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Oof, I actually really liked the square screen design of the preliminary images. It had a much cooler retro sci-fi vibe to me previously, now it looks a bit forgettable and basic.

I want to know the thickness, because I might just cancel based off this redesign. Which is unusual for me but ya, I'm not digging it.

[–] coffeetastesbadlikecoffee@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Same, I just pre ordered one the other day and now with this redesign I am considering canceling it. It's not that bad for me, I just really loved the old design. But I do love they are adding more features, I was bummed the time 2 wasn't going to have a compass.

[–] gusgalarnyk@lemmy.world 0 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Did you watch the video where the creator talks about adding more features? I also got the ick from that lol. He talked about throwing in a cheap compass module and not being able to promise how good it was and then said "you're welcome". Maybe I'm being a Karen lol (oh god I should have died a hero), but I didn't like that whole exchange. If I recontextualize it to "a friend of mine shooting the shit about his project" it's not bad at all - just my lazy friend complaining about some feedback. But the fact that it's the founder making his supposed baby and having no interest in making the most jam packed, high quality product, makes me a bit upset.

There's that Kickstarter knife going on right now, and watching their video where they're obsessed with putting a whole bunch of bullshit into this knife and doing it elegantly - idk... Felt like a stark contrast from that to this "your welcome for a cheap compass module" attitude.

Idk. I buy things based off of vision and belief in execution right now and this guy makes a slim epaper watch vision feel like a vision of money bags instead. And now the execution misses the mark for me. Vibes are all off. RIP, might get one after reviews now but ya writing this out has convinced me to cancel.

I hope it still slaps for everyone and it's successful. I want more epaper everywhere - love the tech.

[–] OtherOtherOther@lemdro.id 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

He's been incredibly clear that he has a very specific watch in mind that's specifically for him. He's making the watches because he was already satisfied with the Pebble and only added features he felt he would use. He's not concerned about jamming a bunch of features in because he only wants it to do a few basic things.

How you came to him money grabbing is crazy because its such a niche product. He's not even sure he'll make any more after this run. The company isn't big and the vibe when he first launched as Core devices was that it may just be a one and done initiative. He's not trying to be a big company. He's actually trying to stay small. And his ambition is not much bigger than keeping a watch he uses everyday working for the foreseeable future, and new hardware keeps that platform alive.

[–] gusgalarnyk@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Well I haven't read his biography or even really followed him so... I came in with this new watch, have experienced very few things from them as a company, and a couple of the experiences were just a bummer.

I've got nothing against the guy, maybe everything you said is correct, I don't wish him ill - just pointing out some things I experienced with this redesign announcement.

[–] swicano@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 days ago

The video in the link has some really good shots from the side, it looks pretty thick, but this will be my first, so I'm not sure how thick is too thick.

He also says that they're gonna email all the pre-orderers before with the finalized design and let you swap to the smaller one without losing your place in line, if that's an alternative that might interest you.

[–] AliasVortex@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

The blue/ silver is very striking, I'm excited!

[–] ConstantPain@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

What about battery duration?

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

I think they mentioned 20-30 days in their original announcement.

[–] underscores@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

the curvy sides kind of kill it for me lmao. I don't mind the rounding in the corners but the fact that the watch's sides are curved know kills the aesthetic

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

I'm actually glad I ordered the 2 Duo, not at all fond of this new design.

[–] Sagan_Wept@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 5 days ago

I think it looks sexy, but to each their own. I still don't think I'll upgrade till pebble 3

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

There is a round version, but it isn't in production.

[–] FireWire400@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

I actually like the rectangular design they had before
