You certainly won’t regret cooking with the shavings from your Himalayan salt lamp.

[–] salty_chief@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Just sit by it while you eat and lick it.

So chemically salt is NaCl; are there any additives in a salt lamp that make it deviate from that structure?

Cuz if not it would be cool to actually use your salt lamp for something useful.

It's not meant to be food safe and therefore doesn't have to abide by any of the usual food safety requirements.

For all you know, the salt lamp could've spent a month inside leaded fuel and was only superficially cleaned prior to being sold. Sure, it's almost certainly not the case but you just do not know how the lamp was handled and whether it has absorbed hazardous contaminants.

Pure NaCl is cloudy white, so if it has any other color, there are other minerals mixed in the crystals, the NaCl is still there, there are also a buch of other atoms

They probably have a higher percentage of dirt than table salt

other natural salts (like in rock salt) perhaps. never seen such lamp irl so haven't tasted (is it safe?).

I've licked a few salt lamps and I'm still here, so it must be safe

I'll do you one better, my school loved to take us on trips to various mines so I have licked the walls of salt mines several times now. Salt kills biological hazards at least, so it's a lot safer than one might think

[–] Mandarbmax@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've licked a few too and am also alive. I suspect that they are deadly and that you and I are the only two who are immune to it.

Well, there was a recent AI mistake which recommended sodium bromide, which causes psychosis. So results may vary, particularly by quantity.

It's something Steven Brule would recommend.

For your health!
