I'm so glad I'm not a young person in school

Gen Alpha is screwed even more than gen Z

I'm not surprised. The only thing we're good at in this country is making weapons.

That's a bald faced lie. We're also good at producing food with a lot of calories and no nutritional value.

So will these drones be paid for by a gun sales tax or will they just cut more social services?

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago

While getting into an arms race with school shooters is kind of a ridiculous path, I do wish we would take this opportunity to develop personal force field/shield technology like they have in Dune.

Let me guess. They also use AI?

I'm sure this will solve the problem. And, no chance at all it will be abused, somehow.

LOL they’re using the DJI Video system on those drones. The antennas are DJI.

And that is the absolute worst thing they could have used. DJIs wall penetration sucks ass and since schools are typically built sturdier than regular houses, they’ll have 2 rooms of nice image that turn into a blocky Minecraft mess right after. They should have gone with a high power analog system since that would give the best wall penetration.

Also, they only recently allowed BVLOS flights in the USA - might be for these things only.

To add to that: those drones can be hacked, but only if you press the WiFi button on the drone itself, since it deactivates that when powered on normally; or if you connect it via USB. Also, if they control it via remote - the DJI remote is worse than ELRS. A 868 ELRS module would be better penetration wise but worse for latency. You can’t hack ELRS remotely, since they are secured via passphrase. If your passphrase is "I don’t like where this is going", you need to install that on the drone and the controller. Any drone with that phrase can be controlled with any controller using that phrase.

Also, the drone in the picture is likely a 3“ cinewhoop. Those are made for lift, not for speed. But even then, the maximum weight of one of those would be 1200 grams. Looking at the pictures, 600 grams could be the battery and about 200 the drone, that leaves 400 grams for deadly things.

Lol wasn't that like a I did a thing video?

[–] mhague@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Honestly there are aspects about this that I like. In the vein of bomb defusal robots being obviously good. But with, you know, current politics and our chronic issues, it just feels sinister.

Hacks drone, oops. Let's stick with metal detectors and guards
