Fediverse vs Disinformation

1741 readers
30 users here now

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

enshitification of snopes.... figures

I wouldn't call it enshitification. It's preemptive self-censorship to avoid the wrath of an authoritarian regime

It's important to differentiate from regular enshitification where a service is made worse in an effort to extract more value from users. In this case it is to the detriment of Snopes and its users

Seems a safe bet the impetus for it was that they didn't feel they could accurately report Kirk's statements without reprisal from the government

OK, let's say he was joking and that quote is way out of context. So what?

A) It's so tasteless, you and I might get fired for saying it out loud or even on FaceBook.

B) Worse, his audience is perfectly happy to internalize and repeat the quote.
