The other day, I had an interview for a position that was advertised as "full-time, but part-time is an option, too." They asked me why I wanted to work part-time when I'm still young and full of energy^TM^. I said something about work-life balance, but the truth is, I'm scared that this comic is gonna be my reality. I'm just not willing to sacrifice such a large chunk of my life to our corporate overlords.
All depends on the situation you're in, though people generally end up needing to work all those hours to survive basically. If you have the privilege to work fewer hours and enjoy your life more, it makes perfect sense you'd want to do so. It is inherently an exploitative system, though it's more than just the raw number of hours worked too. Personally, part time wasn't much better than full time for me, because I'd just be scheduled all over the place to patch gaps for full-timers, so I never had any routine consistency. Regardless, I hope things work out for you if you get that position.
Yes, being scheduled whenever there's a gap stinks because it makes it really hard to get into a good rhythm. And I agree that working part-time is a privilege, and I'm fortunate to live in a part of the world where you can live somewhat comfortably with a net salary of ~€1,400 a month, though there are no retirement savings in that. If I had to provide for a family or wanted to live in something bigger than a one-room flat, though, it'd be tough to make ends meet without a full-time job.
I used to work full-time for a while, but it took a lot out of me and made me suicidal after half a year. Maybe that was also because my employer sucked, but I'm scared of that happening again. I'd love to see a different system one day, a system that is not exploitative. Anyway, thank you for your kind words. I doubt it'll work out, but maybe it will. Who knows.
