I assumed it was just the company pulling the plug on that particular AI personality, maybe I'm thinking of something else

Most of the time, they move on to other projects. Like when you graduate highschool and go to college. The term comes from idol culture and often times when an Idol "graduates", they move onto a solo music career, form a group with other graduated talents, pursue an acting career or simply become private citizens again.

IDOl CulturE iS SO toXIC!!!

Yeah, so is the culture around child actors/musicians in the west.

Vtubing terminology is the single stupidest aspect of the entire thing.

[–] NoPanko@feddit.uk 37 points 1 day ago (3 children)

It’s literally just Japanese idol terminology

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 1 points 2 hours ago

What you mean like it's just direct translations of Japanese terms into English?

[–] MediumGray@lemmy.ca 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] NoPanko@feddit.uk 13 points 1 day ago

Oh i agree completely I’m just saying that’s why its so weird. I was just being too minimalist in my comment i guess because otherwise i feel like I’m rambling

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

I thought idols were like..dead fictional gods?

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 49 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Even weirder how hololive forbids talking about their new carreers as if their dead not graduated

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

meh. Anyone from that big of a company that wants to be found again, will be found again. Cover also doesn't seen punish their talents for honest mistakes like when Kiara had her little slipup on her personal account. This biggest issue happened when Mel shared some internal company matters with a friend she trusted, which because Cover is publicly traded, could count as Insider Trading and the company couldn't look the other way.

[–] chellewalker@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's not just a Hololive thing; Vshojo was an outlier in that it's talents could maintain their identities when they left the company, but every other Vtubet agency does the same thing.

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Didn't Vshojo have their own variety of fuckery?

[–] HollowNaught@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, they stole half a million in donations their talents had made for a charity

[–] chellewalker@lemmy.ca 3 points 23 hours ago

And then the entire company collapsed over the course of like 3 days.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Embezzlement/fraud iirc. But it was small proportionally in total viewership: Image

The real comparison would probably be between corporate and independent vtubers overall.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Weird that VSPO is counted separately when it's a subsidiarity of BraveGroup, which manages or "manages" a lot of different vtuber orgs. They would be higher if all the orgs were counted together.

Also, they're starting to have their own fuckary now.

[–] Harvey656@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

That's just the way Japanese do these things, look at the rules their YouTuber and what not have to stick to, talking about this stuff could be real, serious legal ramifications. Craziness.

[–] scytale@piefed.zip 26 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I don't even know what a vtuber retirement is. When they stop streaming?

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

When they stop streaming as that character.

The term "graduating" comes from Japanese pop idol culture, where a pop idol retiring is called "graduating."

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Creepy and weird IMO

And I say this as a bit of a weeb

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Its a culture difference. Its not my place to police another culture, I am just saying what the origin of the term is.

[–] KAtieTot@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)
[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I am not about to say that someone's else's culture is wrong. Even if I personally feel that way, that is only my opinion, and only applies to me and how I might choose to interact with another culture.

I am not an authority on what is right or wrong in a culture, and quite frankly, neither are you.

[–] vateso5074@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know the full ins and outs myself, but most of these VTubers are managed by agencies who own the rights to the characters they portray. The people behind the character get paid for their work, and they can choose to take better jobs elsewhere, but they don't get to bring the characters with them. Basically like how Tom Kenny (voice actor for SpongeBob) can't just decide to be SpongeBob somewhere else, he doesn't own the character.

When a VTuber decides to retire or if they take a better job with a different agency, the character "graduates," which I think is just used because it's a softer word than "retire." The fans just get to imagine the character is off doing bigger and better things, not that they're euthanized or locked in a storage unit somewhere gathering dust. In theory I guess the agency could continue using the character for merch and promo material, or even recast, though I have no idea how well that would go in an industry with fans as obsessive as theirs.

We've had First Gura, yes, but what about Second Gura?

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Technically we are into third gura if im not mistaken.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yup and all three of them got YouTube Golden Play Buttons.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago

When they leave their agency

[–] SnoringEarthworm@sh.itjust.works 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 49 minutes ago) (2 children)

Dooby, Saba, Mint, Doki, Nimi, and Henya.

All my oshis must be Jason Bourne, because they survived the kill squads and returned from the dead.

Edit: How could I forget Henya?

[–] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 34 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Dooby, Saba, Mint, Doki, and Nimi.

My brain turned off for a second and I thought you were listing Linux distros

[–] baltakatei@sopuli.xyz 4 points 9 hours ago

Window Saba 2000

[–] xx3rawr@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

All roads lead to Linux here in Lemmy

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 8 points 1 day ago

Some of them had done it multiple times, even

[–] Phoenix3875@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Not deep in the vtuber culture, but I thought the term comes from things like Love Live. The idols are supposed to be high school students.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 13 points 1 day ago

It's actually like molting, they might disappear for a couple weeks then show up in a different skin

But it's also a very dangerous process and disturbing them during this period can cause them to hurt themselves

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

It's like that scene in Cloud Atlas.

[–] PhobosAnomaly@feddit.uk 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If it helps, here's a story that's the exception that proves the rule...

We adopted a dog. A beautiful Romanian Shepherd. Lovely dog, friendly as fuck, mega playful... but wasn't a fan of kids. That was unfortunate, because our kids loved the dog but after a while the dog got a bit bitey. No warning, no growl, just fuck you and chomp. Thankfully, the only thing that stopped him from doing some serious damage was that he was a good boi and never proper sunk his teeth in.

Long story boring, we tried to rehome him, tried to calm him, tried to train him out of it, but the dog wouldn't settle. Took him to the vets to give him a once over before the rescue charity took him back... and he bit the vet. That fucked a lot of things - the rescue was mega wary, the vet had recommended euthanasia, and keeping him wasn't an option.

Long story short, we found a farm that specialised in dogs that had some "behavioural quirks", and we took him halfway across the country to live there. It was a lovely place - loads of land, quiet, and dozens of corners where he could do his favourite thing - sit in a corner and chew on his toy.

I miss that dog, but I'm glad he's happy.

[–] JesusChristLover420@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That exception didn't prove the rule at all

[–] PhobosAnomaly@feddit.uk 1 points 1 day ago

Thank you for your feedback!
