I've seen many people talk about how they really like using YouTube ReVanced as their main way of watching YT on their phones.

I've also seen people talk about NewPipe aswell. Personally, I use NewPipe because I can't stand the YouTube app, and I don't want to set up ReVanced for it. I just want something that works.

So to you Lemmy users, which do you use and why? What is about your choice that you like?

i don't like having microg in the background so I use pipepipe, seems to work well enough. (and i don't watch much youtube)

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 5 points 18 hours ago

ReVanced is just the way to go for me. Good UI is a requirement, and sponsorblock and return YT dislike integration is a must have

I use NewPipe instead of Vanced for a few months now. Aside from a bug where it can't load large playlists, it's fine, I had no problems with it, and this large list loading bug is also fixed in a random development build apk, so that's fixed.

The interface is... not the most convenient in some places, but it's no worse than the official YouTube app.

But it's good. If you don't need your account's recommendations or don't want to comment, it's perfect.

I did the change, because for a while I had to use a... weird little Android phone (Qin F22 Pro) and NewPipe was my only option to have YouTube. Since then I've got a different phone, but still stuck with NewPipe, to me it's more than enough on the phone. Mostly I use it for listening music in the background, but not exclusively.

It's an interesting plus that it can handle SoundCloud and BandCamp too.

i like revanced cause i can log on and use it just like the official app but without ads :)

[–] db2@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Unless it's YouTube Music, is that still broken?

I use Grayay. I've found it more consistent/reliable than NewPipe and, like you, I don't want the YouTube app on my phone (even if it has been modded). Also, I just don't believe using cracked/modded versions of official applications is a good long-term solution to problems. ReVanced works really well but it is basically the last choice I would make, for that reason.

One of the pipe forks for me. One apk, simple to install, update and use. Also no accounts so the platform is used very differently. With pipe, I search for a video or playlist and piss off when its over. There's no customized feed of videos I might be interested in, so I don't get swallowed into it.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

Ironically I use ReVanced for the reason you don't: it just works.

NewPipe requires a bunch of setup, and I'm too old and low on dopamine to bother trying to figure it out.

I use ReVanced because I like having my subscriptions and having unknown content recommended to me. Even though the algorithm has been especially shitty in the last few months. Maybe I'll switch after all.

[–] Electricd@lemmybefree.net 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

Algorithms are the sole reason I go for Google products :(

Unpopular opinion, but I would much prefer having gold algorithms on Lemmy as well

[–] j4k3@piefed.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

New Pipe is okay, but Pipe Pipe is better. Revanced is not on fdroid IIRC

[–] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 10 points 1 day ago

Revanced isn't really open source. Maybe the manager is, but then it more or less depends on closed source appa. They basically take the official app and modify it with their patches.

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah, thats what I personally use. I used NewPipe in the title as the main name as apps like PipePipe and Tubular are forks of NewPipe.

[–] pfr@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 18 hours ago

Grayjay is hands down the best

[–] dontsayaword@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm using Tubular, a NewPipe fork.

Based on this thread I'm trying out PipePipe

[–] masterofn001@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago

I have used pipepipe exclusively for years and have had almost zero issue with it.

Simple. Consistent. Lightweight.

I use FreeTube and NewPipe. But Google just broke them. Even yt-dlp needed to implement a JavaScript engine.

I'm using ReVanced in the meantime but I'm not enjoying it. It's good as a backup I suppose as it's better than using YouTube through a browser.

Here's my guide for installing ReVanced via obtainium, just incase it can be useful for someone

Edit: just used PipePipe for the first time. It works and seems like a better alternative than YouTube ReVanced to me.

[–] Lfrith@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep I like pipepipe because it has sponsorblock.

[–] CubitOom@infosec.pub 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

So does FreeTube and ReVanced

I like FreeTube the most because its multiplatform.

[–] Lfrith@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I use freetube on my desktop. Fix for that is taking a while.

[–] achille225@jlai.lu 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I currently use the external player with FreeTube (set it to use MPV) It's not as good as the original player (for comments for instance), but at least it works

[–] AstroLightz@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Same setup I use. I'm really missing the comments right now. Hopefully a fix comes soon.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 20 hours ago

Not gonna matter soon. Google is shutting down sideloading (essentially) in a few months or however long it is. To sideload (unless you have a non-google rom), the dev will need to supply ID and get google's permission to upload to the play store, but you can sure as shit bet that apps like newpipe won't be getting approval, because that directly affects google's bottom line.

I use the mobile site through Firefox so I can block the ads with extensions

[–] Stez827@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I like libretube because it has the nicest interface and works well

[–] warm@kbin.earth 3 points 1 day ago

NewPipe or a fork. I personally use PipePipe. The interface is much nicer than anything else, no over the top "modern" design, just simple and functional.

[–] Auster@thebrainbin.org 3 points 1 day ago

Don't like Youtube's design choices, too bloated and the little you can configure is all over the place. NewPipe from the little I used it was a bit noisy, but felt like it better used the space than YT, and also had integration to a few other services.
