We do not have uranium enrichment capacity for manufacturing SMR fuel. CANDU reactors on the other hand use Canadian fuel.

But we can mine a lot of uranium. And why not build enrichment facilities?

it's kind of like saying that we shouldnt use gasoline because it's all refined outside of canada. Only burn crude oil! (i would be ok with this.... less car dependency, means less foreign gasoline dependency)

Oh we could but today we're building SMRs and we don't have the enrichment which means even if we build enrichment we'd be dependent on the US until then.

But then again I can't help but think how the US would react to us developing enrichment facilities, you know, the same ones needed for nukes. It's certain some people in power would raise the possibility of us gaining nukes and what the security implications of that would be. Especially in a 51st State, fascist context.

CANDU also has a lot of different possible fuel cycles, from Wikipedia, these are some of the possible options
Possible CANDU Fuel Cycles

We also already have the ability to produce heavy water for them.
