President Donald Trump is considering plans to target cocaine facilities and drug trafficking routes inside Venezuela, though he has not yet made a decision on whether to move forward with them, three US officials told CNN.

Outward signs on Friday pointed toward a major potential military escalation, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordering the Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier strike group currently stationed in Europe to the Caribbean region amid a massive buildup of US forces there. Trump has also authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations in Venezuela.

And by "cocaine facilities," he means "random sites selected by Stephen Miller."

Reading over Venezuela's history, this is merely because the US oil companies are pissed that Venezuela nationalized their oil.

They won't be targeting cocaine facilities.

[–] sobchak@programming.dev 16 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Venezuela isn't even a major source of cocaine or even a major transit route for it.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

But they got a lot of that sweet sweet crude

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Actually of all the things they could have claimed to target, why cocaine?

Like, shit, there's so many other things people could have believed slightly more than cocaine.

[–] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

MAGA base doesn't think like that. South American country, and Trump says there's cocaine there? Yes, of course that's true, why even check those facts?

Fair. I do tend to give them too much credit on what they do/do not know or care to know.

one of the steps in purifying cocaine used gasoline. they will target oil infrastructure and call it part of the cocaine production.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"Cocaine facilities". Like hospitals, schools, the press, and the Parliament?

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

The Israel-Hamas playbook all over again?

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

This has to be the most ridiculous shows of power and disproportionate responses ever. Cocaine is not the drug causing all the problems even.

Hello! The 80's called and wants their drug war back.

Hey kids, you remember the War on Minorit...err I mean Drugs. Don't worry, we got the Department of War to take care of that now riiiight!?

[–] ToastedRavioli@midwest.social 13 points 2 days ago

Surely the government will be raiding ski towns to take cocaine from the hands of the rich folk any day now

I guess Don Jr is getting his supply from Columbia these days.

British.

Unsuspected to all, those sequoia forests hide surprisingly hardy cocaine farms.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago

War on drugs is now an excuse for wars

[–] BingBong@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

JFC. I don't know anyone that supports this nonsense. Seems to be pure Trump idiocy and vendetta. Any of you in MAGA country hearing otherwise?

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 days ago

They support whatever FOX news tells them to support. They don't do critical thinking of their own. For them...

R next to their name, good, infallible.

D, evil, unhinged, powerful, weak.

[–] nutsack@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago

isn't that shit made in the forest? i seen like 9 documentaries. he'd be shooting rockets at tarps and little improvised toilets

[–] SpiceDealer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Why am I getting "Iraq 2003" vibes?

[–] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

Attacking the wrong country, backing it up with lies? Yeah, sounds a lot like it.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago

lmao, I mean obviously the trumps want that coke for themselves. But waging international war to get it? Come on man, just buy it with some of those taxpayer dollars you’ve been grifting and be happy. Sheesh.

Anything to distract from Epstein.

[–] rozodru@pie.andmc.ca 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don't understand why though. If the files were released tomorrow and it had his name in big bold colourful letters all throughout it what then? I know he's in them, you know he's in them, EVERYONE knows he's in them so what's the point? motions to impeach the fucker get presented almost every week and go no where. Why would I believe THIS time would be different? Nothing can touch the guy. Hell he lead a coup at one point and US fuckers elected him AGAIN.

I GUARANTEE you if the files were released tomorrow there would be a collective "A-HA TOLD YA SO" and then jack all because that's how Americans operate - focus on one thing, get obsessed with it, lose focus, wait for the next thing.

[–] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

It's not Trump's name they're worried about. There are likely hundreds (if not thousands) of extremely wealthy, powerful people in those files. Trump is protecting his true base...the wealthy.

I hope they blow up everything Trump likes in return

[–] kmartburrito@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

He just wants his cut of the profits, duh

[–] 100@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

so when a venezuelan sub torpedos or drones a us carrier down to the sea floor in response, what then?

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 9 points 2 days ago

According to Wikipedia Venezuela has a single submarine whose operational status is unclear. It also has only a single missile frigate, with the rest of its navy being a few dozen patrol boats and gunboats.

Venezuela isn't going to be attacking that carrier group. At best it'll try to shoot down US aircraft and missiles that are actively bombing them.
